A BILL TO BE ENTITLED
AN ACT
1- 1 To amend Article 3 of Chapter 3 of Title 50 of the Official
1- 2 Code of Georgia Annotated, relating to other state symbols,
1- 3 so as to designate the peanut as the official state crop; to
1- 4 provide for related matters; to repeal conflicting laws; and
1- 5 for other purposes.
1- 6 WHEREAS, for several decades, Georgia has been responsible
1- 7 for producing nearly 50 percent of the total United States
1- 8 peanut crop; and
1- 9 WHEREAS, over 50 percent of the peanuts used in the
1-10 production of peanut butter comes from the State of Georgia;
1-11 and
1-12 WHEREAS, Georgia leads the nation in peanut exports,
1-13 supplying nearly 60 percent of the United States export
1-14 markets and contributing over $150 million to our nation's
1-15 balance of trade.
1-16 BE IT ENACTED BY THE GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF GEORGIA:
SECTION 1.
1-17 Article 3 of Chapter 3 of Title 50 of the Official Code of
1-18 Georgia Annotated, relating to other state symbols, is
1-19 amended by adding a new Code section at the end thereof, to
1-20 be designated Code Section 50-3-70, to read as follows:
1-21 "50-3-70. (Index)
1-22 The peanut is designated as the official Georgia state
1-23 crop."
SECTION 2.
1-24 All laws and parts of laws in conflict with this Act are
1-25 repealed.
