HB 1618 LC 25 0237 A BILL TO BE ENTITLED AN ACT 1- 1 To amend Code Section 32-6-24 of the Official Code of 1- 2 Georgia Annotated, relating to the length of vehicles and 1- 3 loads, so as to authorize automobile carriers of a specific 1- 4 length and configuration to be used on certain highways; to 1- 5 provide an effective date; to repeal conflicting laws; and 1- 6 for other purposes. 1- 7 BE IT ENACTED BY THE GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF GEORGIA: SECTION 1. 1- 8 Code Section 32-6-24 of the Official Code of Georgia 1- 9 Annotated, relating to length of vehicles and loads, is 1-10 amended by striking paragraph (3) of subsection (b) and 1-11 inserting in lieu thereof a new paragraph (3) to read as 1-12 follows: 1-13 "(3)(A) Vehicles Except as provided in subparagraph 1-14 (B) of this paragraph, vehicles transporting motor 1-15 vehicles (commonly known as automobile carriers) shall 1-16 not exceed 65 feet in length and shall not carry a 1-17 load exceeding 65 feet in length; provided, however, 1-18 that an automobile carrier with a stinger steered unit 1-19 shall be allowed a maximum length of 75 feet exclusive 1-20 of overhang. However, subsection (a) of this Code 1-21 section, which provides that no trailer shall exceed 1-22 48 feet in length, shall not apply to automobile 1-23 carriers. 1-24 (B) On highways which are designated for use by 1-25 oversized vehicles (commonly known as the national 1-26 network) pursuant to the Federal Surface 1-27 Transportation Assistance Act of 1982 (P.L. 97-424), 1-28 as amended, and on the state designated routes 1-29 providing reasonable access to such highways as 1-30 provided for in such Act and any federal rules and 1-31 regulations promulgated thereunder, vehicles 1-32 transporting motor vehicles (commonly known as 1-33 automobile carriers) with a stinger steered unit shall -1- (Index) LC 25 0237 2- 1 not exceed an overall length of 100 feet including any 2- 2 overhang, and each unit of such vehicle shall not 2- 3 exceed an overall length of 56 feet exclusive of 2- 4 overhang. Subsection (a) of this Code section, which 2- 5 provides that no trailer shall exceed 48 feet in 2- 6 length, shall not apply to such automobile carriers." SECTION 2. 2- 7 This Act shall become effective upon its approval by the 2- 8 Governor or upon its becoming law without such approval. SECTION 3. 2- 9 All laws and parts of laws in conflict with this Act are 2-10 repealed. -2- (Index)
