A BILL TO BE ENTITLED
AN ACT
1- 1 To amend Article 1 of Chapter 3 of Title 50 of the Official
1- 2 Code of Georgia Annotated, relating to the state and other
1- 3 flags, so as to provide for the display of the American flag
1- 4 and the state flag at certain locations on Memorial Day and
1- 5 Veterans Day; to repeal conflicting laws; and for other
1- 6 purposes.
1- 7 WHEREAS, the General Assembly recognizes the important
1- 8 contributions of the thousands of Georgians whose military
1- 9 service has had a profound effect on history; and
1-10 WHEREAS, Memorial Day, the last Monday in May, is a national
1-11 holiday commemorating those who died in active military
1-12 service; and
1-13 WHEREAS, Veterans Day, the eleventh day of November, is a
1-14 national holiday on which the service and sacrifices of
1-15 veterans are recognized;
1-16 WHEREAS, it is in the best interest of our state and nation
1-17 that we express our continuing gratitude to our veterans
1-18 whose sacrifices serve as constant reminders of the high
1-19 price of liberty; and
1-20 WHEREAS, it is only fitting and proper to commemorate the
1-21 patriotic sacrifices of our military personnel by displaying
1-22 the American flag and the Georgia state flag on Memorial Day
1-23 and Veterans Day.
1-24 NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT ENACTED BY THE GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF
1-25 GEORGIA:
SECTION 1.
1-26 Article 1 of Chapter 3 of Title 50 of the Official Code of
1-27 Georgia Annotated, relating to the state and other flags, is
1-28 amended by striking in its entirety Code Section 50-3-3,
1-29 relating to the display of the state flag, and inserting in
1-30 lieu thereof a new Code Section 50-3-3, to read as follows:

2- 2 (a) The state flag shall be displayed on appropriate
2- 3 occasions in the public and private schools of this state
2- 4 and in all patriotic meetings, and the citizens of the
2- 5 state are requested to take the pledge of allegiance set
2- 6 out in Code Section 50-3-2.
2- 7 (b) The American flag and the state flag shall be
2- 8 displayed each Memorial Day and Veterans Day at the state
2- 9 capitol, James H. 'Sloppy' Floyd Veterans Memorial
2-10 Building, and Veterans Park located at the corner of
2-11 Memorial Drive and Trinity Avenue in Atlanta, Georgia.
2-12 The Georgia Building Authority shall be responsible for
2-13 carrying out the provisions of this subsection."
SECTION 2.
2-14 All laws and parts of laws in conflict with this Act are
2-15 repealed.
