HB 58 LC 14 6354 A BILL TO BE ENTITLED AN ACT 1- 1 To amend Chapter 1 of Title 42 of the Official Code of 1- 2 Georgia Annotated, relating to penal institutions in 1- 3 general, so as to provide that any person sentenced to 1- 4 confinement for a period of two years or more and who has 1- 5 not received a high school diploma or general educational 1- 6 development (GED) equivalency diploma shall not be eligible 1- 7 for parole or early release until such person has received a 1- 8 general educational development (GED) equivalency diploma; 1- 9 to provide for related matters; to repeal conflicting laws; 1-10 and for other purposes. 1-11 BE IT ENACTED BY THE GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF GEORGIA: SECTION 1. 1-12 Chapter 1 of Title 42 of the Official Code of Georgia 1-13 Annotated, relating to penal institutions in general, is 1-14 amended by adding a new Code Section 42-1-12 to read as 1-15 follows: 1-16 "42-1-12. (Index) 1-17 Any person sentenced to confinement for a period of two 1-18 years or more and who has not received a high school 1-19 diploma or general educational development (GED) 1-20 equivalency diploma shall not be eligible for parole or 1-21 early release until such person has attained a general 1-22 educational development (GED) equivalency diploma." SECTION 2. 1-23 All laws and parts of laws in conflict with this Act are 1-24 repealed. -1- (Index)
