HB 69 LC 16 3822 A BILL TO BE ENTITLED AN ACT 1- 1 To amend Article 7 of Chapter 3 of Title 20 of the Official 1- 2 Code of Georgia Annotated, relating to scholarships, loans, 1- 3 and grants, so as to provide that the HOPE scholarship 1- 4 program of grants to qualifying high school students shall 1- 5 be extended to those qualifying students attending 1- 6 accredited private colleges and universities located in the 1- 7 State of Georgia; to provide for related matters; to repeal 1- 8 conflicting laws; and for other purposes. 1- 9 BE IT ENACTED BY THE GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF GEORGIA: SECTION 1. 1-10 Article 7 of Chapter 3 of Title 20 of the Official Code of 1-11 Georgia Annotated, relating to scholarships, loans, and 1-12 grants, so as to provide that the HOPE scholarship program 1-13 of grants to qualifying high school students shall be 1-14 extended to those qualifying students attending accredited 1-15 private colleges and universities located in the State of 1-16 Georgia, is amended by adding a new Code Section 20-3-251 to 1-17 read as follows: 1-18 "20-3-251. (Index) 1-19 All Georgia high school students who graduate with a 3.0 1-20 cumulative grade point average in the college preparatory 1-21 curriculum or a 3.2 cumulative grade point average in 1-22 other curricula will be eligible to receive a Helping 1-23 Outstanding Pupils Educationally (HOPE) Scholarship 1-24 Program grant equal to the difference between the amount 1-25 paid by Pell or other grants and the cost of tuition at 1-26 any Georgia public college such student actually attends 1-27 if such student's family income for the year of such 1-28 student's graduation from high school is below the level 1-29 set by the Georgia Student Finance Commission for the 1-30 awarding of such grants for that year. Any student who is 1-31 a resident of this state, graduates from a high school in 1-32 this state, whose family income is below that amount set 1-33 by the commission, and who attends an accredited private -1- (Index) LC 16 3822 2- 1 college or university located in this state shall receive 2- 2 a HOPE grant in an amount equivalent to the average such 2- 3 grant awarded to a similarly situated student attending a 2- 4 public college or university of the University System of 2- 5 Georgia. The HOPE grants shall be funded entirely from 2- 6 proceeds of the Georgia lottery."
