HR 1005 LC 10 1662 A RESOLUTION 1- 1 Designating the Hamilton E. Holmes Drive in Fulton County; 1- 2 and for other purposes. 1- 3 WHEREAS, Hamilton E. Holmes was born on July 8, 1941, to 1- 4 Alfred "Tup" Holmes and Isabella C. Holmes and was a 1- 5 lifelong resident of Fulton County; and 1- 6 WHEREAS, in January, 1961, he and Charlayne Hunter were the 1- 7 first African Americans to enter the University of Georgia; 1- 8 and 1- 9 WHEREAS, he subsequently graduated with honors in 1963 and 1-10 was elected Phi Beta Kappa; and 1-11 WHEREAS, he was the first African American student to attend 1-12 Emory University School of Medicine where he received the 1-13 doctor of medicine degree in 1967; and 1-14 WHEREAS, Dr. Hamilton E. Holmes served his country honorably 1-15 in the United States Army in Germany where he attained the 1-16 rank of major; and 1-17 WHEREAS, upon his discharge from the U.S. Army, Dr. Holmes 1-18 embarked on a distinguished medical career as an orthopedic 1-19 surgeon; and 1-20 WHEREAS, Dr. Holmes further distinguished himself as 1-21 assistant professor of orthopedics and associate dean at 1-22 Emory University School of Medicine; and 1-23 WHEREAS, Dr. Holmes served Grady Memorial Hospital as Senior 1-24 Vice President of Medical Affairs, medical director, and 1-25 head of orthopedic surgery for the Grady Health System; and 1-26 WHEREAS, Dr. Holmes received numerous honors, awards, and 1-27 citations for professional and community service; and 1-28 WHEREAS, Dr. Holmes was elected as trustee to the University 1-29 of Georgia Foundation; and 1-30 WHEREAS, the University of Georgia honored him with the 1-31 Bicentennial Medal and established the Holmes-Hunter Lecture 1-32 Series at the university in his honor; and Hamilton E. Holmes Drive; designate 1005) -1- (Index) LC 10 1662 2- 1 WHEREAS, Emory University bestowed upon him the Emory Medal, 2- 2 the highest honor given alumni for his achievements and 2- 3 contributions; and 2- 4 WHEREAS, he was held in high regard by the citizens of the 2- 5 City of Atlanta, Fulton County, and the State of Georgia. 2- 6 NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF 2- 7 GEORGIA that the portion of Georgia Highway 280 in Fulton 2- 8 County from its point of intersection with Georgia Highway 8 2- 9 (also known as U.S. Highway 278/8) southward to its 2-10 intersection with Georgia Highway 139 is designated the 2-11 Hamilton E. Holmes Drive. 2-12 BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Department of Transportation 2-13 is authorized and directed to erect and maintain appropriate 2-14 signs designating the Hamilton E. Holmes Drive. 2-15 BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Clerk of the House of 2-16 Representatives is authorized and directed to transmit an 2-17 appropriate copy of this resolution to the commissioner of 2-18 transportation and to the family of Dr. Hamilton E.
