HR 1109 LC 9 8820S A RESOLUTION 1- 1 Designating the Lewis C. Adams, Jr., Bridge; designating the 1- 2 Carl Savage Peaster, Sr., Highway; designating a portion of 1- 3 Georgia Highway 114 in Chattooga County as the Lieutenant 1- 4 Colonel Lee Lenderman Memorial Highway; and designating the 1- 5 J. W. "Champ" Harrelson Memorial Bridge; and for other 1- 6 purposes. Part I 1- 7 WHEREAS, Lewis C. Adams, Jr., spent his boyhood near 1- 8 Chatterton, Georgia; and 1- 9 WHEREAS, he answered his county's call to duty in the 1-10 infantry of the United States Army; and 1-11 WHEREAS, he was a Private First Class in Company B, 19th 1-12 Infantry Regiment, 24th Infantry Division, on October 14, 1-13 1951, when his company encountered intense enemy fire near 1-14 Pyoru, Korea; and 1-15 WHEREAS, he volunteered to stay behind, providing cover fire 1-16 while the other soldiers retreated; and 1-17 WHEREAS, he gave his life for his fellow soldiers and in the 1-18 defense of liberty; and 1-19 WHEREAS, for his extraordinary courage, he was posthumously 1-20 awarded the Silver Star; and 1-21 WHEREAS, his family remembers him as a kind man, happiest 1-22 when he could spend time with his family or help a friend or 1-23 stranger; and 1-24 WHEREAS, he was laid to rest at Chatterton Church, where his 1-25 parents, two sisters, and a brother also have been laid to 1-26 rest. 1-27 NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF 1-28 GEORGIA that the members of this body designate the bridge 1-29 on State Route 32 over Otter Creek, near Chatterton, 1-30 Georgia, as the Lewis C. Adams, Jr., Bridge, in honor of 1-31 this courageous soldier and devoted family man. -1- (Index) LC 9 8820S Part II 2- 1 WHEREAS, Carl Peaster is a distinguished resident of 2- 2 Montezuma, Georgia, who retired after an illustrious 40 year 2- 3 career as a coach and principal; and 2- 4 WHEREAS, for the past 21 years, he served as principal of 2- 5 Macon County High School where he was loved by the many 2- 6 students who he motivated and inspired to achievement; and 2- 7 WHEREAS, he was born and raised in Montezuma and graduated 2- 8 from Macon County High School in 1952 where he was a star of 2- 9 the basketball team; and 2-10 WHEREAS, as a basketball player, he was a National Hall of 2-11 Fame nominee, scored 2,000 points in high school, was state 2-12 tournament MVP, played All-State for three years, was an 2-13 all-star, and averaged 22 points per game in college; and 2-14 WHEREAS, as a basketball coach his accomplishments include: 2-15 a record of 447 wins, 98 losses, and 37 championships; 2-16 coaching one All-American team, six All-Stars, and numerous 2-17 All-States; 26 girls received scholarships; National Coach 2-18 of the Year runner-up in 1982 and a nomination in 1985; six 2-19 times regional Coach of the Year; twice Georgia Coach of the 2-20 Year; and once Southeastern United States Coach of the Year; 2-21 and 2-22 WHEREAS, following his high school graduation he served a 21 2-23 month tour of duty with the United States Army, serving in 2-24 army intelligence; and 2-25 WHEREAS, after being honorably discharged, he spent his 2-26 college years at Georgia Southwestern College and Georgia 2-27 Southern University; and 2-28 WHEREAS, after graduating in 1959, he was named head 2-29 basketball coach and assistant football coach at Jackson 2-30 High School in Jackson, Georgia; and 2-31 WHEREAS, family ties and his love of Montezuma proved 2-32 stronger than money or position, and he returned to Macon 2-33 County High School, where he served 11 years as boys' 2-34 basketball coach and assistant football coach, 21 years as 2-35 principal, and girls' basketball coach until 1985; and 2-36 WHEREAS, he is a prominent member of the First Baptist 2-37 Church in Montezuma where he serves as deacon and director 2-38 of the Sunday school; and -2- (Index) LC 9 8820S 3- 1 WHEREAS, he and his wife, Gail, have three children, Todd, 3- 2 Buddy, and Ginger Avril; two grandchildren; and two 3- 3 step-grandchildren; and 3- 4 WHEREAS, Carl Peaster, devoted husband, father, and 3- 5 grandfather, dedicated principal, beloved coach, outstanding 3- 6 athlete, and church leader has had an indelible impact on 3- 7 his community and it is abundantly appropriate that a 3- 8 citizen who has contributed so much be recognized by the 3- 9 designation of a highway in his honor. 3-10 NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF 3-11 GEORGIA that the portion of Georgia Highway 90 from Macon 3-12 County High School to the city limits is designated as the 3-13 Carl Savage Peaster, Sr., Highway. Part III 3-14 WHEREAS, Marcus Lee Lenderman was a native of Chattooga 3-15 County, Georgia, and an outstanding, multi-sport athlete at 3-16 Chattooga High School from which he graduated in 1969 after 3-17 setting numerous school records, receiving many awards for 3-18 superior athletic performance, and being recognized for his 3-19 leadership; and 3-20 WHEREAS, Lee Lenderman not only excelled in athletic 3-21 competition but also was an outstanding scholar and 3-22 maintained a "straight A" average at Chattooga High School, 3-23 and he went on to graduate from the University of Georgia in 3-24 1975 after lettering in football at that institution for two 3-25 years; and 3-26 WHEREAS, Lee Lenderman thereafter devoted his career and 3-27 life to serving his nation as an officer in the United 3-28 States Marine Corps and first reported for duty to Marine 3-29 Attack Helicopter Squadron 169 at Camp Pendleton, 3-30 California, in 1978; and 3-31 WHEREAS, Lee Lenderman served his country with distinction 3-32 and pride as a helicopter pilot, rose to the rank of 3-33 Lieutenant Colonel, and earned numerous commendation and 3-34 service medals for his outstanding service and devotion to 3-35 duty before giving his all in the defense of his nation when 3-36 he was killed while on a nighttime live ammunition 3-37 helicopter training mission in California in 1993; and 3-38 WHEREAS, Lee Lenderman graced his family, community, and 3-39 country with his courage and leadership, and it is only 3-40 fitting and proper that his name should be memorialized in 3-41 his native state and county. -3- (Index) LC 9 8820S 4- 1 NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED BY THE GENERAL 4- 2 ASSEMBLY OF GEORGIA that that portion of Georgia Highway 114 4- 3 in Chattooga County between the intersection of said highway 4- 4 with U.S. Highway 27 and the corporate limits of the Town of 4- 5 Lyerly is designated as the Lieutenant Colonel Lee Lenderman 4- 6 Memorial Highway. Part IV 4- 7 WHEREAS, there is a bridge over the Little Ocmulgee River, 4- 8 known locally as Gum Swamp Creek, which separates Wheeler 4- 9 County and Telfair County on Wheeler County Road No. 180; 4-10 and 4-11 WHEREAS, the land upon which such bridge is constructed 4-12 together with a substantial portion of the right of way of 4-13 said county road was donated by J. W. "Champ" Harrelson; and 4-14 WHEREAS, J. W. "Champ" Harrelson was a native son of 4-15 Georgia, born and reared in Wheeler County, Georgia, where 4-16 he lived nobly until his death in 1955; and 4-17 WHEREAS, there is considerable interest among members of the 4-18 community around such bridge that it be named in honor of J. 4-19 W. "Champ" Harrelson. 4-20 NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF 4-21 GEORGIA that the bridge over the Little Ocmulgee River, 4-22 known locally as Gum Swamp Creek, which separates Wheeler 4-23 County and Telfair County and located in the 1450 G. M. 4-24 District of Wheeler County, Georgia, on the right of way of 4-25 County Road No. 180 be designated as the J. W. "Champ" 4-26 Harrelson Memorial Bridge. Part V 4-27 BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Department of Transportation 4-28 is directed to provide and maintain appropriate signs 4-29 designating the Lewis C. Adams, Jr., Bridge, the Carl Savage 4-30 Peaster, Sr., Highway, the Lieutenant Colonel Lee Lenderman 4-31 Memorial Highway, and the J. W. "Champ" Harrelson Memorial 4-32 Bridge. 4-33 BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Clerk of the House of 4-34 Representatives is authorized and directed to transmit 4-35 appropriate copies of this resolution to Ms. Linda Anderson 4-36 Selph, Mr. Carl Savage Peaster, Sr., the family of Lee 4-37 Lenderman, Mr. J. W. Harrelson's daughter, Rosa Harrelson 4-38 Crowe, and the Department of Transportation. -4- (Index)
