A RESOLUTION
1- 1 Commending Sara and Herbert Buffington; and for other
1- 2 purposes.
1- 3 WHEREAS, Sara and Herbert Buffington have been awarded the
1- 4 Lamar Haley Community Service Award for 1995, presented
1- 5 annually by the Canton Rotary Club for outstanding service
1- 6 to Cherokee County, in recognition of their more than 50
1- 7 years of service, individually and jointly, to the people of
1- 8 Cherokee County; and
1- 9 WHEREAS, Herbert Buffington is a member of one of the oldest
1-10 families in Cherokee County, and, after attending Reinhardt
1-11 College and the University of Georgia and completing his
1-12 military service in World War II, he began what would become
1-13 a successful half-century in the practice of law in Canton
1-14 and became an active member of the Democratic Party; and
1-15 WHEREAS, Sara Buffington is a native of Mississippi, but she
1-16 has embraced her adoptive home, and, in addition to her
1-17 roles as wife, homemaker, and mother, she has remained
1-18 active as a Sunday School teacher in the Canton Methodist
1-19 Church and as a member of the Canton Garden Club; and
1-20 WHEREAS, after successfuly raising their family, Sara and
1-21 Herbert Buffington became a guiding force in the
1-22 preservation of Cherokee County history and were
1-23 instrumental in organizing the 150th Anniversary Celebration
1-24 of Cherokee County and in the creation of the Cherokee
1-25 County Historical Society in which they continue to be
1-26 active leaders. The culmination of their efforts has been a
1-27 successful campaign to keep the courthouse in Canton and the
1-28 education of newcomers to the county, resulting in the
1-29 Cherokee County Justice Center in Canton, Georgia; and
1-30 WHEREAS, the outstanding contributions of this couple
1-31 demonstrate the power of a united effort by a husband and
1-32 wife.
1-33 NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF
1-34 REPRESENTATIVES that the members of this body do commend and
1-35 congratulate Sara and Herbert Buffington on being selected
1-36 as recipients of the Lamar Haley Community Service Award.
