A RESOLUTION
1- 1 Recognizing licensed dietitians of the Georgia Dietetic
1- 2 Association and qualified nutritionists of the Georgia
1- 3 Nutrition Council; designating March, 1995, as Georgia
1- 4 Nutrition Month at the Capitol; and for other purposes.
1- 5 WHEREAS, diseases of nutritional deficiency such as rickets,
1- 6 pellegra, scurvy, beriberi, xerophthalmia, and goiter have
1- 7 largely been conquered due to improved nutritional intake in
1- 8 Georgia; and
1- 9 WHEREAS, the quantity of current animal, laboratory,
1-10 clinical, and epidemiologic evidence associates dietary
1-11 excesses and imbalances with chronic disease; and
1-12 WHEREAS, five of the ten leading causes of death (coronary
1-13 heart disease, cancer, stroke, diabetes, and
1-14 atherosclerosis) are linked with diet; and the afflictions
1-15 of high blood pressure, obesity, osteoporosis, liver
1-16 disease, and gastrointestinal maladies have a link to
1-17 dietary excesses or deficiencies; and
1-18 WHEREAS, recovery from surgery, burns, and wounds is
1-19 hastened by medical nutrition therapies; and
1-20 WHEREAS, good nutritional practices, which include the
1-21 intake of a variety of foods; maintenance of a desirable
1-22 weight; avoidance of too much fat, saturated fat, and
1-23 cholesterol; intake of adequate starch and fiber; avoidance
1-24 of excess sugar and sodium; and moderate, if any, alcohol
1-25 intake can delay or prevent the onset of these diseases; and
1-26 WHEREAS, licensed dietitians of the Georgia Dietetic
1-27 Association and qualified nutritionists of the Georgia
1-28 Nutrition Council seek to educate all Georgians about good
1-29 nutritional intake and its contribution to sustained good
1-30 health and improved quality of life.
1-31 NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF
1-32 REPRESENTATIVES that the members of this body recognize the
1-33 many services of licensed dietitians of the Georgia Dietetic
1-34 Association and qualified nutritionists of the Georgia
1-35 Nutrition Council and designate March, 1995, as Georgia
1-36 Nutrition Month at the Capitol.
