A RESOLUTION
1- 1 Commending Robert Matthew Sutherland; and for other
1- 2 purposes.
1- 3 WHEREAS, Robert Matthew Sutherland, a senior at the
1- 4 University of Georgia, recently received the great honor of
1- 5 being selected as an American Rhodes scholar; and
1- 6 WHEREAS, Robert will receive his bachelor's degree in
1- 7 biology and his master's degree in conservation ecology in
1- 8 the summer of 1996; and
1- 9 WHEREAS, only 32 Americans are chosen each year as Rhodes
1-10 scholars, with four selected from the Southeast, to study
1-11 any subject they wish at prestigious Oxford University in
1-12 Oxford, England; and
1-13 WHEREAS, Robert is the University of Georgia's first Rhodes
1-14 scholar in more than 20 years, and while the students and
1-15 faculty are thrilled to bask in his reflected glory, they
1-16 will be sorry to see such a brilliant and well-liked student
1-17 leave the campus; and
1-18 WHEREAS, Robert's star was rising long before he arrived on
1-19 the college campus; he was valedictorian at North Springs
1-20 High School in 1992, a National Merit Scholar, and he had
1-21 received the Georgia Certificate of Merit, the Spartan
1-22 Participation Award, and numerous other awards in high
1-23 school; and
1-24 WHEREAS, in high school, Robert won numerous science and
1-25 classics prizes, belonged to many honor societies, performed
1-26 in several bands and orchestras, worked as layout editor for
1-27 the North Springs Literary Magazine, volunteered for the
1-28 Special Olympics, played ALTA tennis and was a member of the
1-29 track and cross country teams, presided over the Latin Club,
1-30 and spent summers studying at Duke University, Northwestern
1-31 University, and in the Governor's Honors Program; and
1-32 WHEREAS, Robert attended UGA on a Foundation Fellowship, was
1-33 a Renaissance Scholar and a member of the UGA Honors
1-34 program, and received a Barry M. Goldwater scholarship, as
1-35 well as many other grants; and

2- 1 WHEREAS, despite such enormous academic achievement, Robert
2- 2 currently finds the time for playing the trombone and cello,
2- 3 mountain biking, and backpacking in exotic locales; and
2- 4 WHEREAS, even in the summers of college, Robert did not slow
2- 5 down but rather took courses at the Sierra Institute,
2- 6 studied German in Erlangen, Germany, and researched the
2- 7 health of coral reefs in the Florida Keys among other
2- 8 active, academic pursuits.
2- 9 NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF
2-10 REPRESENTATIVES that the members of this body commend and
2-11 congratulate Robert Matthew Sutherland on his amazing
2-12 achievements and wish him every good fortune during his
2-13 course of study at Oxford University.
2-14 BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Clerk of the House of
2-15 Representatives is authorized and directed to transmit an
2-16 appropriate copy of this resolution to Robert Matthew
2-17 Sutherland.
