A RESOLUTION
1- 1 Commending Mr. J.W. Exley, Jr.; and for other purposes.
1- 2 WHEREAS, Mr. J.W. Exley, Jr., was born in 1932 in Clyo,
1- 3 Georgia, the son of J.W. Exley, Sr., a farmer, timber man,
1- 4 and sawmill man, and Ruby Wilson Exley; and
1- 5 WHEREAS, at the age of five, young J.W. got his first
1- 6 guitar, a Sears and Roebuck model, which the untutored but
1- 7 talented left-handed boy taught himself to play left-handed
1- 8 with the high E string on top, in the fashion of the
1- 9 legendary blues man, Albert King, and throughout his
1-10 childhood he played his guitar, graduating to bands as a
1-11 young man; and
1-12 WHEREAS, in the 1950's he performed live on radio in
1-13 Swainsboro, Georgia, where he played with such
1-14 professionals as Webb Peirce and Jerry Lee Lewis, and he
1-15 played in the band backing Hank Williams, Jr., when young
1-16 Hank had to stand on a Coca-Cola crate to reach the
1-17 microphone, and he later moved to Nashville, where he became
1-18 friends with the great musician and guitar builder Shot
1-19 Jackson, who built J.W. a first-of-a-kind left-handed and
1-20 backward pedal steel guitar to accommodate J.W.'s unique
1-21 playing style; and
1-22 WHEREAS, realizing a dream, he recorded an album featuring
1-23 two of his original compositions, and he was invited to
1-24 perform on the ShoBud Showcase at the Nashville Auditorium,
1-25 where country music greats Roy Clark, Chet Atkins, and Ray
1-26 Price also played, and he also played on the WSM Grand Ole
1-27 Opry, where he was introduced by country music legend Roy
1-28 Acuff, and later he played on a Savannah television show,
1-29 The Georgia Drifters Show; and
1-30 WHEREAS, J.W. still enjoys playing and listening to his
1-31 music on his album.
1-32 NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF
1-33 REPRESENTATIVES that the members of this body commend Mr.
1-34 J.W. Exley, Jr., for his musical career and for the
1-35 enjoyment he has brought to so many people through his
1-36 music.
