SB 12 95 LC 23 0176 SENATE BILL 12 By: Senators Newbill of the 56th, Clay of the 37th, Gochenour of the 27th and others A BILL TO BE ENTITLED AN ACT 1- 1 To amend Article 19 of Chapter 2 of Title 20 of the Official 1- 2 Code of Georgia Annotated, relating to textbooks, so as to 1- 3 provide for additional methods of approving textbooks; to 1- 4 provide for related matters; to repeal conflicting laws; and 1- 5 for other purposes. 1- 6 BE IT ENACTED BY THE GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF GEORGIA: SECTION 1. 1- 7 Article 19 of Chapter 2 of Title 20 of the Official Code of 1- 8 Georgia Annotated, relating to textbooks, is amended by 1- 9 striking Code Section 20-2-1012, relating to committee or 1-10 committees to make recommendation on textbooks, and 1-11 inserting in its place a new Code Section 20-2-1012 to read 1-12 as follows: 1-13 "20-2-1012. (Index) 1-14 (a) The State Board of Education shall select a committee 1-15 or committees of educators actually engaged in public 1-16 school work in this state to examine textbooks and make 1-17 recommendations thereon to the state board. Such 1-18 committee or committees shall consist of such number of 1-19 educators as the state board may deem advisable, not 1-20 exceeding five in each instance. They shall serve for such 1-21 time and for such duties as the state board may prescribe 1-22 and shall receive such compensation as may be fixed by the 1-23 state board. 1-24 (b) Notwithstanding the provisions of subsection (a) of 1-25 this Code section, the state board textbook selection 1-26 committee shall recommend to the state board any textbook 1-27 which has been requested by not less than five local 1-28 school systems through the superintendent or school board 1-29 of such local school system." SECTION 2. 1-30 All laws and parts of laws in conflict with this Act are 1-31 repealed. S. B. 12 -1- (Index)
