A RESOLUTION
1- 1 Designating the Buford C. Gilliard Bridge; and for other
1- 2 purposes.
1- 3 WHEREAS, Buford Gilliard was born on August 11, 1924, in
1- 4 Nicholls, Georgia, and graduated from high school in 1943;
1- 5 and
1- 6 WHEREAS, as a member of the Enlisted Reserve he was called
1- 7 to active military duty in September, 1950; and
1- 8 WHEREAS, he landed in Korea within a few weeks, and was
1- 9 reported missing in action on February 12, 1951; and
1-10 WHEREAS, he was promoted to Corporal on May 1, 1953, and
1-11 received the Good Conduct Medal and the Victory Medal; and
1-12 WHEREAS, he was presumed dead on December 31, 1953; and
1-13 WHEREAS, he was a true son of Georgia, who left his civilian
1-14 work as a farmer to answer his country's call in time of
1-15 armed conflict; and
1-16 WHEREAS, he was the beloved husband of Mrs. Bert Gilliard of
1-17 Douglas, Georgia; the son of Mr. and Mrs. W. C. Gilliard of
1-18 Nicholls, Georgia; and the brother of Grace Gray of
1-19 Nicholls, Mrs. J. A. Lingenfelter, Jr., of Waycross,
1-20 Georgia, and Hubert Gilliard of Nashville, Georgia; and
1-21 WHEREAS, he is remembered with affection by many residents
1-22 of Nicholls and Coffee County, and the loss of his life in
1-23 the service of our country has been mourned by his many
1-24 friends.
1-25 NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE GENERAL ASSEMBLY that
1-26 the members of this body designate the bridge over Hog Creek
1-27 on State Route 32 east of Nicholls, Georgia, the Buford C.
1-28 Gilliard Bridge in honor of the memory of this good friend
1-29 and stalwart soldier who gave his life for our country.
1-30 BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Department of Transportation
1-31 is authorized and directed to erect and maintain appropriate
1-32 signs designating the Buford C. Gilliard Bridge.
1-33 BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Secretary of the Senate is
1-34 authorized and directed to transmit appropriate copies of
