A RESOLUTION
1- 1 Commending Sylvia Dunnavant; and for other purposes.
Sylvia Dunnavant - commend 643
1- 2 WHEREAS, Sylvia Dunnavant is the author of the book
1- 3 Celebrating Life: African American Women Speak Out About
1- 4 Breast Cancer; and
1- 5 WHEREAS, released October 1, 1995, the book takes an
1- 6 in-depth look at breast cancer through the eyes of African
1- 7 American women; and
1- 8 WHEREAS, Ms. Dunnavant candidly profiles 62 African
1- 9 Americans, all breast cancer survivors, and tells their
1-10 inspiring stories of struggle and triumph; and
1-11 WHEREAS, hailed as a true celebration of the human spirit,
1-12 Ms. Dunnavant's collection of stories and testimonials
1-13 provides hope and encouragement while increasing awareness
1-14 and raising the consciousness of African Americans with
1-15 regard to the risks of breast cancer; and
1-16 WHEREAS, although the breast cancer death rate for women in
1-17 general has declined since 1989, among African American
1-18 women the death rate continues to rise; and
1-19 WHEREAS, the results of a recent study released by the
1-20 National Cancer Institute reveal that African Americans'
1-21 risk of dying from breast cancer is more than twice that of
1-22 white Americans; and
1-23 WHEREAS, the visibility of African American women who are
1-24 not only surviving breast cancer but surviving it well, as
1-25 presented by Ms. Dunnavant's book, is one of the major keys
1-26 to addressing the cancer crisis in the African American
1-27 community; and
1-28 WHEREAS, a resident of Dallas, Texas, and Executive Director
1-29 of the Celebrating Life Foundation, Ms. Dunnavant has
1-30 carried her message of breast cancer awareness across the
1-31 country and has been an ambassador of hope for millions of
1-32 women fighting breast cancer.
1-33 NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE SENATE that this body
1-34 commends Sylvia Dunnavant for her commitment to advancing
1-35 knowledge and awareness of breast cancer risks and

2- 1 preventive measures, particularly within the African
2- 2 American community where the need is pivotal, and for the
2- 3 inspiration and encouragement provided to millions of women
2- 4 through her book Celebrating Life: African American Women
2- 5 Speak Out About Breast Cancer.
2- 6 BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that this body acknowledges that the
2- 7 month of April has been declared National Cancer Awareness
2- 8 Month and that April 14-21 has been declared National
2- 9 Minority Cancer Awareness Week.
2-10 BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Secretary of the Senate is
2-11 authorized and directed to transmit an appropriate copy of
2-12 this resolution to Ms. Sylvia Dunnavant.
