                        A BILL TO BE ENTITLED 
                               AN ACT 
 
 
  1- 1  To amend Code Section 40-5-31 of the Official Code of 
  1- 2  Georgia Annotated, relating to replacement drivers' licenses 
  1- 3  or permits, so as to provide for issuance or a replacement 
  1- 4  license or permit for the period of time remaining on the 
  1- 5  original issuance; to provide for fees; to provide for 
  1- 6  related matters; to provide an effective date; to repeal 
  1- 7  conflicting laws; and for other purposes. 
 
  1- 8       BE IT ENACTED BY THE GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF GEORGIA: 
 
  1- 9                           SECTION 1. 
 
  1-10  Code Section 40-5-31 of the Official Code of Georgia 
  1-11  Annotated, relating to replacement drivers' licenses or 
  1-12  permits, is amended by striking subsection (a) of said Code 
  1-13  section in its entirety and inserting in lieu thereof the 
  1-14  following: 
 
  1-15    "(a) In the event that an instruction permit or a driver's 
  1-16    license issued under this chapter is lost or destroyed, 
  1-17    the person to whom the same was issued may upon payment of 
  1-18    the required fee and upon furnishing proof satisfactory to 
  1-19    the department that such permit has been lost or 
  1-20    destroyed: 
 
  1-21      (1) Obtain obtain a new permit or license upon 
  1-22      furnishing proof satisfactory to the department that 
  1-23      such permit or license has been lost or destroyed. ; or 
 
  1-24      (2) Obtain a replacement permit or license. 
 
  1-25    A new permit obtained under this Code section shall be 
  1-26    obtained in the same manner and under the same conditions 
  1-27    and limitations as provided in Code Section 40-5-24.  A 
  1-28    new license obtained under this Code section shall be 
  1-29    obtained in the same manner and under the same conditions 
  1-30    and limitations as provided in Code Section 40-5-32, 
  1-31    relating to renewals of licenses.  A replacement permit or 
  1-32    license obtained under this Code section shall be issued 
  1-33    only for the remaining period for which the original

  2- 1    permit or license was issued for a fee of $5.00, and no 
  2- 2    examination or eyesight test shall be required to obtain 
  2- 3    such replacement permit." 
 
  2- 4                           SECTION 2. 
 
  2- 5  This Act shall become effective on July 1, 1997. 
 
  2- 6                           SECTION 3. 
 
  2- 7  All laws and parts of laws in conflict with this Act are
