A RESOLUTION
1- 1 Honoring N. A. West and designating the bridge carrying
1- 2 State Route 2 over the Cartecay River in the City of East
1- 3 Ellijay as the "N. A. West Bridge"; designating the Captain
1- 4 Henry Will Jones Bridge over the Alapaha River; and for
1- 5 other purposes.
1- 6 WHEREAS, N. A. West was a lifelong resident of East Ellijay,
1- 7 born in that city in 1908; and
1- 8 WHEREAS, N. A. West was the founder and owner of N. A. West
1- 9 Block Company, the oldest corporation in East Ellijay and
1-10 one of the oldest in Gilmer County; and
1-11 WHEREAS, N. A. West was honored by the people of East
1-12 Ellijay with 11 terms as their city's mayor, during which
1-13 the foundation for most of East Ellijay's infrastructure was
1-14 laid; and
1-15 WHEREAS, N. A. West passed away in 1986, mourned and
1-16 remembered by the community of East Ellijay as one of the
1-17 noblest citizens and leaders in the city's history.
1-18 NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF
1-19 GEORGIA that the members of this body honor and express
1-20 their appreciation of the late N. A. West for his lifetime
1-21 of service to his community and to the State of Georgia.
1-22 BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the bridge carrying State Route
1-23 2 over the Cartecay River in the City of East Ellijay is
1-24 designated as the "N. A. West Bridge."
1-25 BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Department of Transportation
1-26 is authorized and directed to erect and maintain appropriate
1-27 signs so designating the intersection.
1-28 BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Clerk of the House of
1-29 Representatives is authorized and directed to transmit an
1-30 appropriate copy of this resolution to the family of the
1-31 late N. A. West.

2- 1 WHEREAS, Captain Henry Will Jones of Lanier County was
2- 2 killed in action on October 18, 1944, while serving as a
2- 3 commanding officer of a United States Marine Corps company
2- 4 in the South Pacific during World War II; and he was awarded
2- 5 posthumously the Silver Star Medal by the Secretary of the
2- 6 Navy in recognition of his exemplary valor; and
2- 7 WHEREAS, he had graduated from the University of Georgia and
2- 8 was an instructor in the Laurens County school system when
2- 9 he enlisted in the military following the Japanese attack on
2-10 Pearl Harbor; and he completed officers candidate school,
2-11 paratrooper training, and advanced military training with
2-12 the Marine Corps and was recognized as a distinguished
2-13 officer with considerable potential; and
2-14 WHEREAS, his fearless leadership, great personal valor, and
2-15 unrelenting devotion to duty in the face of extreme danger
2-16 contributed substantially to the success of his division in
2-17 capturing a vital stronghold; and his courage and
2-18 determination upheld the highest traditions of military
2-19 service; and
2-20 WHEREAS, he enjoyed nature and had a strong attachment to
2-21 the region in which he had spent his youth exploring the
2-22 rivers, forests, and wildlife; and he often expressed his
2-23 dream of returning to the Alapaha River in his letters home
2-24 to his family; and
2-25 WHEREAS, it is most fitting and appropriate to honor this
2-26 outstanding young officer who so gallantly gave his life for
2-27 his country.
2-28 NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF
2-29 GEORGIA that the bridge on Georgia Highway 37 that crosses
2-30 that portion of the Alapaha River in Lanier County be
2-31 designated the Captain Henry Will Jones Bridge.
2-32 BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Commissioner of
2-33 Transportation is authorized and directed to place signs at
2-34 appropriate locations along the highway designating the
2-35 bridge over the Alapaha River as the Captain Henry Will
2-36 Jones
