                             A RESOLUTION 
 
  1- 1  Congratulating Mrs. Ethel Francis Stanley on the event of 
  1- 2  her 80th birthday; and for other purposes. 
 
  1- 3  WHEREAS,  Mrs. Ethel Francis Stanley was born January 28, 
  1- 4  1917, in Mountville, Georgia, to William and Cora Dixon and, 
  1- 5  at an early age, exemplified the qualities of leadership, 
  1- 6  integrity, and unity within her family and community; and 
 
  1- 7  WHEREAS, she pursued a career in the medical profession as a 
  1- 8  nurse and concentrated her personal efforts on her marriage 
  1- 9  to Mr. Leon Lamar, Sr., and rearing her two children; and 
 
  1-10  WHEREAS, in 1942 she married Mr. Archie Stanley, and this 
  1-11  long and happy marriage produced seven more children; and 
 
  1-12  WHEREAS, Mrs. Stanley dedicated her time to the children of 
  1-13  her community as well as her own children, opening her home 
  1-14  to young girls and teaching them social and homemaking 
  1-15  skills and instilling in them the principles of good 
  1-16  citizenship; and 
 
  1-17  WHEREAS, she consistently volunteered to design and make 
  1-18  various costumes for numerous school plays and other 
  1-19  performances; and 
 
  1-20  WHEREAS, she held various offices in the Parent-Teacher 
  1-21  Association of the schools her children attended, and she 
  1-22  served for many years as treasurer of her beloved Gary Road 
  1-23  Community Club; and 
 
  1-24  WHEREAS, for many years she worked tirelessly in the 
  1-25  community, schools, and church to provide a desirable 
  1-26  environment for the neighborhood children and was 
  1-27  instrumental in establishing the Center Hill Community 
  1-28  within the City of Atlanta; and 
 
  1-29  WHEREAS, she also devoted her energy to improve the lives of 
  1-30  the elderly and served as supervisor of Senior Citizen 
  1-31  Transportation for E.O.A. until her retirement in 1981; and 
 
  1-32  WHEREAS, her extraordinary devotion to her children and 
  1-33  dedication to their upbringing are evidenced by their 
  1-34  professional and political success, including the political 
  1-35  success of LaNett Stanley and Pamela Stanley, the first

  2- 1  sisters in the history of this state to serve in the General 
  2- 2  Assembly at the same time; and 
 
  2- 3  WHEREAS, Mrs. Stanley worked diligently in the campaigns of 
  2- 4  her daughters, performing whatever task was asked of her; 
  2- 5  and 
 
  2- 6  WHEREAS, a grand lady in every way, Mrs. Stanley instilled 
  2- 7  in her children that happiness is success, that hard work 
  2- 8  and sacrifice build character, and that a life without faith 
  2- 9  in the Lord is useless; and 
 
  2-10  WHEREAS, she is a founding member of Berean Bible Baptist 
  2-11  Church, which began in her home as a Bible study group; and 
 
  2-12  WHEREAS, truly this Georgia born and bred woman of God 
  2-13  stands as a shining example of the Southern traditions of 
  2-14  community involvement, devotion to family, and state pride; 
  2-15  and 
 
  2-16  WHEREAS, it is only fitting and proper to express gratitude 
  2-17  to Mrs. Ethel Francis Stanley, wife, mother, nurse, campaign 
  2-18  worker, and community leader, for having made such 
  2-19  outstanding contributions to the lives of many Georgians; 
  2-20  and 
 
  2-21  WHEREAS, on January 25, 1997, her family is giving a banquet 
  2-22  to celebrate the love and inspiration she has given and the 
  2-23  sacrifices she has made in 80 years of life. 
 
  2-24  NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF 
  2-25  REPRESENTATIVES that the members of this body commend and 
  2-26  recognize Mrs. Ethel Francis Stanley for her inspiring 
  2-27  efforts to improve the quality of life of numerous citizens 
  2-28  of this state and her unparalleled dedication to her family. 
 
  2-29  BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the members of this body wish 
  2-30  Mrs. Ethel Francis Stanley a happy and joyous birthday and 
  2-31  pray that God will grant her many happy returns. 
 
  2-32  BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Clerk of the House of 
  2-33  Representatives is authorized and directed to transmit an 
  2-34  appropriate copy of this resolution to Mrs. Ethel Francis
