A BILL TO BE ENTITLED
AN ACT
1- 1 To amend an Act creating a Board of Commissioners of Coweta
1- 2 County, approved August 26, 1872 (Ga. L. 1872, p. 405), as
1- 3 amended, particularly by an Act approved December 17, 1894
1- 4 (Ga. L. 1894, p. 204), and an Act approved April 17, 1992
1- 5 (Ga. L. 1992, p. 6506), so as to change provisions relating
1- 6 to the compensation of the members of the board of
1- 7 commissioners; to provide that the chairperson of the board
1- 8 of commissioners shall be elected by the members of the
1- 9 board; to repeal provisions relating to the compensation of
1-10 the members of the board of commissioners; to provide for
1-11 related matters; to provide an effective date; to repeal
1-12 conflicting laws; and for other purposes.
1-13 BE IT ENACTED BY THE GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF GEORGIA:
1-14 SECTION 1.
1-15 An Act creating a Board of Commissioners of Coweta County,
1-16 approved August 26, 1872 (Ga. L. 1872, p. 405), as amended,
1-17 particularly by an Act approved December 17, 1894 (Ga. L.
1-18 1894, p. 204), and an Act approved April 17, 1992 (Ga. L.
1-19 1992, p. 6506), is amended by striking Section 3A and
1-20 inserting in its place a new Section 3A to read as follows:
1-21 The compensation of the members of the Board of
1-22 Commissioners of Coweta County other than the chairperson
1-23 shall be $12,000.00 per annum. The compensation for the
1-24 commissioner who is serving as chairperson shall be
1-25 $14,000.00 per annum."
1-26 SECTION 2.
1-27 Said Act is further amended by adding immediately following
1-28 Section 4 a new Section 4A to read as follows:
1-29 (a) The person serving as chairperson of the board of
1-30 commissioners on the effective date of this Act shall

2- 1 continue to serve in that position until a chairperson is
2- 2 elected pursuant to subsection (b) of this section in
2- 3 January 1999.
2- 4 (b) At its first meeting in January of each odd-numbered
2- 5 year, the board of commissioners shall elect one of its
2- 6 members to serve as chairperson of the board. The
2- 7 chairperson of the board of commissioners shall preside
2- 8 over all meetings of the board and shall have a vote on
2- 9 all matters before the board. At its first meeting in
2-10 January of each year the board shall elect from among its
2-11 number a vice chairperson to serve until the first meeting
2-12 of the board in the following year. Any member shall be
2-13 eligible to succeed himself or herself as chairperson or
2-14 vice chairperson. The vice chairperson shall in the case
2-15 of absence or disability of the chairperson assume the
2-16 duties of the chairperson."
2-17 SECTION 3.
2-18 Said Act is further amended by striking in its entirety from
2-19 the amendatory Act approved December 17, 1894 (Ga. L. 1894,
2-20 p. 204) Section III, which reads as follows:
2-21 "SEC. III. Be it further enacted, That said Act be
2-22 further amended by adding thereto the following as a new
2-23 section:
2-24 'Each of said commissioners shall be paid, out of the
2-25 county treasury of said county, the sum of fifty dollars
2-26 per annum, and in addition thereto such sum as may be
2-27 recommended by the grand jury of said county of Coweta,
2-28 such recommendations to be made annually at the spring
2-29 term of the superior court.'"
2-30 SECTION 4.
2-31 This Act shall become effective on January 1, 1998.
2-32 SECTION 5.
2-33 All laws and parts of laws in conflict with this Act are
2-34 repealed.
