SENATE RESOLUTION 50

A RESOLUTION
1- 1 Creating the Sam Nunn Tribute Commission; and for other
1- 2 purposes.
1- 3 WHEREAS, the Honorable Sam Nunn became one of Georgia's most
1- 4 influential leaders and achieved national distinction and
1- 5 honor as a member of the United States Senate for 24 years;
1- 6 and
1- 7 WHEREAS, he was born and reared in Perry, Georgia, attended
1- 8 public school in Houston County, studied at Georgia Tech,
1- 9 and earned his bachelor's and law degrees from Emory
1-10 University; and
1-11 WHEREAS, public service was respected and valued as a proud
1-12 tradition in his family, and he served in the Georgia House
1-13 of Representatives as had his father, Samuel Augustus Nunn
1-14 and his great uncle, Carl Vinson, who later achieved
1-15 national political significance as a prominent member of the
1-16 United States House of Representatives; and
1-17 WHEREAS, during his quarter-century of service in the United
1-18 States Senate, he developed a sterling reputation that
1-19 reflects his personal commitment to intellectual growth,
1-20 ethical conduct, a compassionate regard for persons less
1-21 fortunate, and dedication of his talent to meaningful
1-22 purposes;
1-23 WHEREAS, the Honorable Sam Nunn has returned to his native
1-24 state having received national recognition for his
1-25 leadership, keen judgment, and persuasive ability, and it is
1-26 most appropriate that proper tribute be expressed as a
1-27 lasting testimony to his contributions to our nation and
1-28 state.
1-29 NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF
1-30 GEORGIA that there is created the Sam Nunn Tribute
1-31 Commission to be composed of 15 members as follows: the
1-32 Governor shall appoint five members; the Lieutenant Governor
1-33 shall appoint five members, three of whom shall be members
1-34 of the Senate and two members shall be citizens; and the
1-35 Speaker of the House of Representatives shall appoint five
1-36 members, three of whom shall be members of the House of

2- 1 Representatives and two members shall be citizens. The
2- 2 Governor shall appoint one of his appointees as chair of the
2- 3 commission. The commission is empowered to provide for the
2- 4 creation of an appropriate tribute on state property to
2- 5 honor Sam Nunn for his exceptional public service. The
2- 6 commission is authorized to select the site on state
2- 7 property where such appropriate tribute shall be placed,
2- 8 provided that the site selected shall be subject to the
2- 9 approval of the State Properties Commission or such state
2-10 agency having control thereof. Such tribute shall be
2-11 financed through voluntary contributions, and no state funds
2-12 shall be expended for such tribute or the work of the
2-13 commission. The commission is authorized to accept any
2-14 gift, donation, or grant in furtherance of its purpose and
2-15 is authorized to work with any private group, organization,
2-16 association, or corporation having for its purpose the same
2-17 purpose as the commission created in this resolution. The
2-18 commission shall meet as soon as practicable after all
2-19 members have been designated. The commission shall exist
2-20 until such time as its purpose is accomplished, at which
2-21 time it shall stand abolished.
