SR 65 LC 10 1911
A RESOLUTION
1- 1 Supporting the development of alternative modes of
1- 2 transportation to meet the growing transit needs of the
1- 3 metropolitan Atlanta area; and for other purposes.
1- 4 WHEREAS, the population and economy of the metropolitan
1- 5 Atlanta area have grown rapidly over the past three decades;
1- 6 and
1- 7 WHEREAS, the ever-increasing volumes of vehicle traffic
1- 8 associated with this growth continue to require massive
1- 9 expenditures on new infrastructure; and
1-10 WHEREAS, the negative impacts of this vehicle traffic on the
1-11 quality of water and air in the region are becoming of
1-12 increasing concern; and
1-13 WHEREAS, new road construction is still necessary to meet
1-14 the area's transportation needs, but alternatives must be
1-15 developed and implemented which help meet these growing
1-16 transportation needs in a manner more cost-effective and
1-17 environmentally sound than continued road building by
1-18 itself; and
1-19 WHEREAS, many alternatives, such as rapid rail, pedestrian
1-20 and bike pathways, and high occupancy vehicle lanes are
1-21 already being implemented in the metropolitan Atlanta area
1-22 and throughout the country; and
1-23 WHEREAS, alternative transportation modes offer not only
1-24 increased economic efficiency and reduced environmental
1-25 impact but also increased opportunities for recreation and
1-26 more convenient travel.
1-27 NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE SENATE that this body
1-28 supports the development of alternative modes of
1-29 transportation to meet the growing transit needs of the
1-30 metropolitan Atlanta area and will attempt to implement
1-31 alternative transportation projects in cooperation with
1-32 federal agencies and local governments.
1-33 BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Secretary of the Senate is
1-34 authorized and directed to transmit an appropriate copy of
-1-
2- 1 this resolution to the Mayor and Council of the City of
2- 2 Marietta.
