A BILL TO BE ENTITLED
AN ACT
1- 1 To amend Code Section 40-1-1 of the Official Code of Georgia
1- 2 Annotated, relating to definitions of terms relative to
1- 3 motor vehicles and traffic, so as to redefine crosswalk; to
1- 4 repeal conflicting laws; and for other purposes.
1- 5 BE IT ENACTED BY THE GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF GEORGIA:
1- 6 SECTION 1.
1- 7 Code Section 40-1-1 of the Official Code of Georgia
1- 8 Annotated, relating to definitions of terms relative to
1- 9 motor vehicles and traffic, is amended by striking paragraph
1-10 (10) and inserting in lieu thereof the following:
1-11 "(10) 'Crosswalk' means:
1-12 (A) That Where a roadway at an intersection is not
1-13 marked as provided by subparagraph (C) of this
1-14 paragraph but sidewalks, shoulders, or a combination
1-15 thereof exists, that part of a roadway of such roadway
1-16 at an the intersection, not more than 20 feet in width
1-17 as measured from the prolongation of the lateral line
1-18 of the roadway toward the prolongation of the adjacent
1-19 property line, that is included within:
1-20 (i) The the connections of the lateral lines of the
1-21 sidewalks, shoulders, or combination thereof on
1-22 opposite sides of the highway measured from the
1-23 curbs or, in the absence of curbs, from the edges of
1-24 the traversable roadway; or
1-25 (ii) The prolongation of the lateral lines of a
1-26 sidewalk, shoulder, or both, to the sidewalk or
1-27 shoulder on the opposite side of the highway, if the
1-28 prolongation would meet such sidewalk or shoulder;
1-29 (B) Where a roadway at an intersection is not marked
1-30 as provided by subparagraph (C) of this paragraph and
1-31 there is neither sidewalk nor shoulder, that portion
1-32 of such roadway at the intersection, measuring not
1-33 less than six feet in width, that would be included

2- 1 within the prolongation of the lateral lines of the
2- 2 sidewalk, shoulder, or both on the opposite side of
2- 3 the highway if there were a sidewalk; or
2- 4 (B)(C) Any portion of a roadway at an intersection or
2- 5 elsewhere distinctly indicated for pedestrian crossing
2- 6 by lines or other markings on the surface."
2- 7 SECTION 2.
2- 8 All laws and parts of laws in conflict with this Act are
2- 9 repealed.
