A RESOLUTION
1- 1 Commending Captain Lawrence Merritt of the Coffee County
1- 2 sheriff's department; and for other purposes.
1- 3 WHEREAS, on January 3, 2000, Captain Lawrence Merritt of the
1- 4 Coffee County sheriff's department responded to an "officer
1- 5 down" call in Broxton and ultimately participated in the
1- 6 apprehension of a suspect at the scene of the double
1- 7 homicide of Patrolman James Bryant of the Broxton Police
1- 8 Department and Deputy Almond Merritt of the Coffee County
1- 9 sheriff's department, the latter of whom was Captain
1-10 Merritt's own beloved brother; and
1-11 WHEREAS, in so doing, Captain Merritt acted courageously
1-12 without regard for his own personal safety; and
1-13 WHEREAS, he made a devoted and valiant effort to protect and
1-14 defend the community and preserve the rule of law; and
1-15 WHEREAS, it is only fitting and proper that he be recognized
1-16 by this body for his exemplary public service and that
1-17 condolences be extended to him for the loss of his brother.
1-18 NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF
1-19 REPRESENTATIVES that the members of this body commend
1-20 Captain Lawrence Merritt of the Coffee County sheriff's
1-21 department for his devoted and courageous service as a law
1-22 enforcement officer and express their sympathy to him for
1-23 the loss of his brother.
1-24 BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Clerk of the House of
1-25 Representatives is authorized and directed to transmit an
1-26 appropriate copy of this resolution to Captain Lawrence
1-27 Merritt.
