A RESOLUTION
1- 1 Urging the President of the United States and the United
1- 2 States Congress to provide maximum relief and rescue efforts
1- 3 for Mozambique; and for other purposes.
1- 4 WHEREAS, Mozambique has been devastated by a cyclone and
1- 5 three weeks of the worst flooding in the nation's history;
1- 6 and
1- 7 WHEREAS, the government estimates that 1,000,000 people have
1- 8 been forced to flee by high waters and are urgently in need
1- 9 of humanitarian assistance; and
1-10 WHEREAS, rapidly rising waters have trapped thousands of
1-11 people for several days, some for more than a week, in trees
1-12 or on roof tops; and
1-13 WHEREAS, many desperate people have had no food or clean
1-14 water for days, and the risk of outbreaks of malaria or
1-15 cholera are perils for as many as 800,000 people; and
1-16 WHEREAS, the people of the world were amazed and inspired by
1-17 the courage and fortitude of the young woman who gave birth
1-18 while stranded in a treetop; and
1-19 WHEREAS, aid agencies predict thousands of deaths from the
1-20 disaster; and
1-21 WHEREAS, Dr. Silvano Langa of Mozambique's Institute of
1-22 Disaster Management has said that the catastrophe is so
1-23 overwhelming that some residents see it as the end of the
1-24 world; and
1-25 WHEREAS, the United Nations has requested $13.6 million for
1-26 the crisis.
1-27 NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF
1-28 REPRESENTATIVES that the members of this body urge the
1-29 President of the United States and the United States
1-30 Congress to provide maximum resources for rescue and relief
1-31 in this natural disaster which has inundated Mozambique, and
1-32 further urge that rescue and relief resources be supplied
1-33 and distributed as expeditiously as possible.

2- 1 BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Clerk of the House of
2- 2 Representatives is authorized and directed to transmit an
2- 3 appropriate copy of this resolution to the President of the
2- 4 United States and the Georgia delegation to the United
2- 5 States Congress.
