A RESOLUTION
1- 1 Creating the House Ovarian Cancer Study Committee; and for
1- 2 other purposes.
1- 3 WHEREAS, the American Cancer Society estimates that
1- 4 approximately 26,800 new cases of ovarian cancer were
1- 5 diagnosed in the United States in 1997, and an estimated
1- 6 14,200 women died from ovarian cancer in the United States
1- 7 during that year; and
1- 8 WHEREAS, ovarian cancer is the deadliest malignancy of the
1- 9 female reproductive system, in part because only about 24
1-10 percent of the cases are detected during the early stages of
1-11 the disease; and
1-12 WHEREAS, an estimated 300 Georgians die from ovarian cancer
1-13 annually; and
1-14 WHEREAS, the Pap test, which is an effective detector of
1-15 early cervical cancer, detects ovarian cancer only in the
1-16 later stages; and
1-17 WHEREAS, screening with sonograms and blood tests of women
1-18 who are high risks for developing ovarian cancer, such as
1-19 women with family histories of ovarian cancer or breast
1-20 cancer, would help to save lives by early diagnosis and
1-21 effective treatment; and
1-22 WHEREAS, other life saving programs include public education
1-23 campaigns, programs to alert doctors regarding early
1-24 symptoms, insurance coverage for screening high risk
1-25 populations, and increased research.
1-26 NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF
1-27 REPRESENTATIVES that there is created the House Ovarian
1-28 Cancer Study Committee to be composed of three members of
1-29 the House of Representatives to be appointed by the Speaker
1-30 of the House of Representatives. The Speaker shall
1-31 designate a member of the committee as chairperson of the
1-32 committee. The chairperson shall call all meetings of the
1-33 committee.
1-34 BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the committee shall undertake a
1-35 study of the conditions, needs, issues, and problems

2- 1 mentioned above or related thereto and recommend any actions
2- 2 or legislation which the committee deems necessary or
2- 3 appropriate. The committee may conduct such meetings at
2- 4 such places and at such times as it may deem necessary or
2- 5 convenient to enable it to exercise fully and effectively
2- 6 its powers, perform its duties, and accomplish the
2- 7 objectives and purposes of this resolution. The members of
2- 8 the committee shall receive the allowances authorized for
2- 9 legislative members of interim legislative committees but
2-10 shall receive the same for not more than five days unless
2-11 additional days are authorized. The funds necessary to
2-12 carry out the provisions of this resolution shall come from
2-13 the funds appropriated to the House of Representatives. In
2-14 the event the committee makes a report of its findings and
2-15 recommendations, with suggestions for proposed legislation,
2-16 if any, such report shall be made on or before December 1,
2-17 2001. The committee shall stand abolished on December 1,
2-18 2001.
