                             A RESOLUTION 
 
  1- 1  Commending Beth Shapiro on being named a Rhodes Scholar and 
  1- 2  inviting her to appear before the House of Representatives; 
  1- 3  and for other purposes. 
 
  1- 4  WHEREAS, Beth Shapiro is the only Georgian selected this 
  1- 5  year to receive a coveted Rhodes Scholarship to pursue 
  1- 6  graduate study at Oxford University, considered one of the 
  1- 7  world's foremost universities; and 
 
  1- 8  WHEREAS, she is one of 32 Rhodes Scholars selected from the 
  1- 9  United States and is one of four very accomplished students 
  1-10  chosen from the seven-state district in the southeast; and 
 
  1-11  WHEREAS, she also holds the distinct honor of being the 
  1-12  first female from the University of Georgia to win the 
  1-13  scholarship, and she is the seventeenth Rhodes Scholar ever 
  1-14  selected from the nation's oldest state-chartered 
  1-15  university; and 
 
  1-16  WHEREAS, Beth is the second student from the University of 
  1-17  Georgia's School of Ecology to win a Rhodes Scholarship in 
  1-18  the award's 95-year history, and she will graduate in the 
  1-19  spring with a joint bachelor of science and master of 
  1-20  science degree in ecology; and 
 
  1-21  WHEREAS, this exceptional young scholar has consistently 
  1-22  demonstrated her academic ability and motivation, and her 
  1-23  accomplishments, integrity, and leadership made her an ideal 
  1-24  candidate for this prestigious scholarship and a most 
  1-25  deserving recipient. 
 
  1-26  NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF 
  1-27  REPRESENTATIVES that the members of this body commend Beth 
  1-28  Shapiro on the momentous occasion of being selected as a 
  1-29  Rhodes Scholar for 1999 and convey to her their heartiest 
  1-30  congratulations and best wishes in her future pursuits. 
 
  1-31  BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that Beth Shapiro is invited to 
  1-32  appear before the House of Representatives on a date and 
  1-33  time to be determined by the Speaker of the House of 
  1-34  Representatives.

  2- 1  BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Clerk of the House of 
  2- 2  Representatives is authorized and directed to transmit an
