                             A RESOLUTION 
 
  1- 1  Commending Georgia Institute of Technology on the Hesburgh 
  1- 2  Award; and for other purposes. 
 
  1- 3  WHEREAS, on February 15, 1999, Georgia Institute of 
  1- 4  Technology received the prestigious Theodore M. Hesburgh 
  1- 5  Award for Faculty Development to Enhance Undergraduate 
  1- 6  Teaching and Learning; and 
 
  1- 7  WHEREAS, this national teaching award recognizes innovation 
  1- 8  and excellence in undergraduate teaching and encourages such 
  1- 9  initiatives at American colleges and universities; and 
 
  1-10  WHEREAS, the Teachers Insurance and Annuity Association and 
  1-11  the College Retirement Equities Fund (TIAA-CREF) created the 
  1-12  Hesburgh Award in 1993 to reward leadership in university 
  1-13  teaching; and 
 
  1-14  WHEREAS, the Hesburgh Award is given to one university in 
  1-15  the United States each year, and Georgia Tech is the first 
  1-16  university in Georgia to receive this honor and joins the 
  1-17  ranks of the nation's premier institutions of higher 
  1-18  education; and 
 
  1-19  WHEREAS, Georgia Tech's Center for the Enhancement of 
  1-20  Teaching and Learning is endowed by alumni gifts, and its 
  1-21  success reflects the university's commitment to excellent 
  1-22  teaching as the core of its educational mission. 
 
  1-23  NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF 
  1-24  REPRESENTATIVES that the members of this body recognize and 
  1-25  commend the Georgia Institute of Technology on winning the 
  1-26  1999 Hesburgh Award for teaching and convey their 
  1-27  congratulations and appreciation to President G. Wayne 
  1-28  Clough and the faculty. 
 
  1-29  BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Clerk of the House of 
  1-30  Representatives is authorized and directed to transmit an 
  1-31  appropriate copy of this resolution to President G. Wayne
