A RESOLUTION
1- 1 Recognizing International Longshoremen's Association Local
1- 2 1414; and for other purposes.
1- 3 WHEREAS, on March 15, 1999, International Longshoremen's
1- 4 Association Local 1414 observed its sixty-third anniversary;
1- 5 and
1- 6 WHEREAS, Local 1414 has worked throughout its history to
1- 7 establish an outstanding package of wages, insurance
1- 8 protection, vacation benefits, and pension benefits for its
1- 9 members, has worked tirelessly to improve the working
1-10 conditions of its members, and has established a federal
1-11 credit union for the benefit of its members; and
1-12 WHEREAS, the proud history of Local 1414 includes help from
1-13 President Franklin Roosevelt in securing the first
1-14 collective bargaining agreement with intransigent employers,
1-15 a struggle to require all hiring to take place at the union
1-16 hall, organizing maintenance and repair shop workers, its
1-17 first woman longshoreman, and its first political forum; and
1-18 WHEREAS, Local 1414 has been an active participant in
1-19 bringing new industry to the State of Georgia, in helping to
1-20 enhance the export of Georgia products, and in encouraging
1-21 the use of Georgia's outstanding port facilities; and
1-22 WHEREAS, it is only fitting and proper that Local 1414 be
1-23 recognized on the occasion of its sixty-third anniversary.
1-24 NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF
1-25 REPRESENTATIVES that the members of this body recognize and
1-26 commend International Longshoremen's Association Local 1414
1-27 for its many contributions to its members and the citizens
1-28 of the State of Georgia and extend their congratulations on
1-29 the sixty-third anniversary of Local 1414.
1-30 BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Clerk of the House of
1-31 Representatives is authorized and directed to transmit an
1-32 appropriate copy of this resolution to Local 1414.
