A RESOLUTION
1- 1 Paying tribute to Dr. John William Jamerson, Jr.; and for
1- 2 other purposes.
1- 3 WHEREAS, Dr. John William Jamerson, Jr., will long be
1- 4 remembered by his many friends and family members who valued
1- 5 the leadership, courage, and commitment of this prominent
1- 6 figure in Savannah, Georgia, and his contributions to social
1- 7 justice within his native community; and
1- 8 WHEREAS, he was born on September 22, 1910, graduated from
1- 9 Lincoln University of Pennsylvania in 1933 and from Meharry
1-10 Medical College in 1941, and served in the Air Force as a
1-11 captain during the Korean War; and
1-12 WHEREAS, he practiced dentistry in Savannah for more than 40
1-13 years, was past president of the Georgia Dental Society and
1-14 Chatham Dental Society, a life member of the American Dental
1-15 Association and the Georgia Dental Association, a fellow in
1-16 the Academy of General Dentistry and the Academy of
1-17 Dentistry International; and
1-18 WHEREAS, he served as a dentist at the Chatham County Health
1-19 Department; he was a former secretary to the dental staff at
1-20 Memorial Medical Center; and he was an emeritus member of
1-21 the dental staffs of Historic Charity Hospital, Memorial
1-22 Medical Center, Candler General Hospital, and St. Joseph's
1-23 Hospital upon his retirement in 1986; and
1-24 WHEREAS, he was a life member of the NAACP, and in 1986 he
1-25 received the Freedom Award from the Savannah Chapter where
1-26 he was an active participant in the civil rights movement
1-27 having been the plaintiff in the suit that earned Blacks the
1-28 right to register to vote in Chatham County; and
1-29 WHEREAS, Dr. Jamerson was a devout Christian and an active
1-30 member of St. Matthew's Episcopal Church for more than 50
1-31 years, and he was an influential member of the Human
1-32 Relations Council of Savannah and the Board of Directors of
1-33 Carnegie Library; and
1-34 WHEREAS, the exemplary contributions of this distinguished
1-35 Georgian have significantly improved the lives of countless

2- 1 others, and his generous gift of his many talents will be
2- 2 long cherished.
2- 3 NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF
2- 4 REPRESENTATIVES that the members of this body pay tribute to
2- 5 Dr. John William Jamerson, Jr., and convey their heartfelt
2- 6 sympathy to the members of his family.
2- 7 BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Clerk of the House of
2- 8 Representatives is authorized and directed to transmit an
2- 9 appropriate copy of this resolution to the family of Dr.
2-10 John William Jamerson, Jr.
