                             A RESOLUTION 
 
  1- 1  Urging all members of the General Assembly, elected 
  1- 2  officials, public employees, and visitors to refrain from 
  1- 3  smoking anywhere within the state capitol; and for other 
  1- 4  purposes. 
 
  1- 5  WHEREAS, the smoking of tobacco products creates a serious 
  1- 6  health hazard to those who smoke as well as to those who are 
  1- 7  exposed to secondhand smoke in enclosed areas; and 
 
  1- 8  WHEREAS, secondhand smoke has been shown to be a dangerous 
  1- 9  carcinogen; and 
 
  1-10  WHEREAS, more than 4,000 individual compounds have been 
  1-11  identified in tobacco and tobacco smoke, including 60 
  1-12  compounds that are carcinogens, tumor initiators, and tumor 
  1-13  promoters; and 
 
  1-14  WHEREAS, scientists estimate that secondhand smoke causes 
  1-15  about 3,000 lung cancer deaths each year; and 
 
  1-16  WHEREAS, the future of this state will be in the hands of 
  1-17  today's children, and it is incumbent upon all adults to 
  1-18  take appropriate actions to discourage young people from 
  1-19  smoking tobacco products and to prevent the serious effects 
  1-20  of secondhand smoke on children; and 
 
  1-21  WHEREAS, numerous children are present in the state capitol 
  1-22  during the sessions of the General Assembly; and 
 
  1-23  WHEREAS, the exposure of children under 14 years of age to 
  1-24  secondhand smoke in enclosed spaces presents an unacceptable 
  1-25  risk to these children; and 
 
  1-26  WHEREAS, it is the responsibility of all adults to serve as 
  1-27  positive role models for young people; and 
 
  1-28  WHEREAS, tobacco smoke is a detriment to the beautifully 
  1-29  restored capitol, its furnishings, and its occupants. 
 
  1-30  NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF 
  1-31  REPRESENTATIVES that the members of this body urge all 
  1-32  members of the General Assembly, elected officials, public 
  1-33  employees, and visitors to refrain from smoking anywhere 
  1-34  within the state capitol.
