                             A RESOLUTION 
 
  1- 1  Commending Zeta Phi Beta Sorority and inviting 
  1- 2  representatives to appear before the House of 
  1- 3  Representatives; and for other purposes. 
 
  1- 4  WHEREAS, Zeta Phi Beta Sorority was founded on January 16, 
  1- 5  1920, on the campus of Howard University in Washington, D.C. 
  1- 6  as the sister organization to Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity; and 
 
  1- 7  WHEREAS, five female students were charter members of Zeta 
  1- 8  Phi Beta: Arizona Cleaver Stemons, Pearl A. Neal, Fannie 
  1- 9  Pettie Watts, Viola Tyler Goings, and Myrtle Tyler Faithful; 
  1-10  and 
 
  1-11  WHEREAS, Zeta Phi Beta Sorority encourages the highest 
  1-12  standards of scholarship through scientific, literary, 
  1-13  cultural, and educational programs; promotes service 
  1-14  projects on college campuses and in the community; fosters 
  1-15  sisterhood; and exemplifies the ideals of finer womanhood; 
  1-16  and 
 
  1-17  WHEREAS, key officers today include: Dr. Barbara West 
  1-18  Carpenter, national president; Bettye H. Shelling, 
  1-19  southeastern regional director; and Melinda S. Stovall, 
  1-20  Georgia state director; and 
 
  1-21  WHEREAS, the members and auxiliary groups of this sorority 
  1-22  provide voluntary service to community outreach programs, 
  1-23  fund scholarships, support organized charities, and promote 
  1-24  legislation for social change. 
 
  1-25  NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF 
  1-26  REPRESENTATIVES that the members of this body commend Zeta 
  1-27  Phi Beta Sorority on its proud history of service and invite 
  1-28  representatives from the sorority to appear before the House 
  1-29  of Representatives at a time to be determined by the 
  1-30  Speaker. 
 
  1-31  BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Clerk of the House of 
  1-32  Representatives is authorized and directed to transmit an 
  1-33  appropriate copy of this resolution to Zeta Phi Beta 
  1-34  Sorority.
