                             A RESOLUTION

  1- 1 Commending the Dougherty Comprehensive High School football
  1- 2 team and inviting the team and coaches to appear before the
  1- 3 House of Representatives; and for other purposes.

  1- 4 WHEREAS, 1998 was the "Year of the Trojan" in southwest
  1- 5  Georgia; and

  1- 6 WHEREAS, the Dougherty Comprehensive High School Trojans
  1- 7 capped a brilliant season by winning its first state
  1- 8  championship on December 19, 1998; and

  1- 9 WHEREAS, the Trojans' title run, capped by a 27-7 rout of
  1-10 Peach County in Fort Valley was selected by The Albany
  1-11  Herald as Southwest Georgia's top sports story of the year;
  1-12  and

  1-13 WHEREAS, the entire community rejoiced in the wake of the
  1-14 first state championship won by a Dougherty County school
  1-15 system football team since 1959; and

  1-16 WHEREAS, in its dominating march to the state championship,
  1-17 Dougherty Comprehensive High School posted a 13-2 record,
  1-18 including playoff wins against Greenbrier, Hardaway, Marist,
  1-19  and Cairo; and

  1-20 WHEREAS, the Trojans thrashed No. 1 Marist High School 45-28
  1-21 in Hugh Mills Stadium two weeks before claiming the Class
  1-22  AAA crown; and

  1-23 WHEREAS, although many prognosticators doubted the Trojans
  1-24 all season, Coach John Reynolds' squad served notice it was
  1-25 a threat to win it all in its second game against Tift
  1-26 County when they hammered the 1997 Class AAAA runner-up
  1-27  29-8; and

  1-28 WHEREAS, the Trojans rushed for an average of 203.0 yards
  1-29  per game and passed for an average of 161.9 yards per game;
  1-30  and

  1-31 WHEREAS, with a remarkably balanced offense complementing
  1-32 its typically hard-hitting defense, Coach Reynolds' club
  1-33 proved itself one of the best football teams in the history
  1-34  of Dougherty County.

                                 -1-
