                             A RESOLUTION 
 
  1- 1  Commending the Coffee County Sheriff's Department; and for 
  1- 2  other purposes. 
 
  1- 3  WHEREAS, on January 3, 2000, members of the Coffee County 
  1- 4  Sheriff's Department responded to an "officer down" call in 
  1- 5  Broxton, assisted in the attempted rescue of mortally 
  1- 6  wounded Patrolman James Bryant of the Broxton Police 
  1- 7  Department, and ultimately participated in the apprehension 
  1- 8  of a homicide suspect; and 
 
  1- 9  WHEREAS, in so doing, numerous members of the Sheriff's 
  1-10  Department acted effectively and courageously without regard 
  1-11  for their own personal safety, and ultimately one of them, 
  1-12  Deputy Almond Merritt, sacrificed his life in the effort; 
  1-13  and 
 
  1-14  WHEREAS, the members of the Coffee County Sheriff's 
  1-15  Department made a devoted and valiant effort to protect and 
  1-16  defend their fellow officers and community and preserve the 
  1-17  rule of law; and 
 
  1-18  WHEREAS, it is only fitting and proper that they be 
  1-19  recognized by this body for their exemplary public service. 
 
  1-20  NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF 
  1-21  REPRESENTATIVES that the members of this body commend the 
  1-22  Coffee County Sheriff's Department, under the leadership of 
  1-23  Sheriff Carlton Evans, for their devoted and courageous 
  1-24  service as law enforcement officers. 
 
  1-25  BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Clerk of the House of 
  1-26  Representatives is authorized and directed to transmit an 
  1-27  appropriate copy of this resolution to the Coffee County
