                             A RESOLUTION 
 
  1- 1  Designating the month of May as Stroke Awareness Month in 
  1- 2  Georgia; and for other purposes. 
 
  1- 3  WHEREAS, strokes or brain attacks are our nation's third 
  1- 4  leading cause of death, killing over 150,000 Americans 
  1- 5  annually and claiming thousands of victims in the State of 
  1- 6  Georgia; and 
 
  1- 7  WHEREAS, though one American experiences a stroke every 
  1- 8  minute of the day, up to 50 percent of strokes are 
  1- 9  preventable; and 
 
  1-10  WHEREAS, stroke is the leading cause of adult disability in 
  1-11  America, with three million citizens presently living with 
  1-12  the effects of a stroke or brain attack; and African 
  1-13  Americans have almost double the stroke risk of most other 
  1-14  racial groups; and 
 
  1-15  WHEREAS, the Georgia Strike Out Stroke Committee and the 
  1-16  American Heart Association Stroke Task Force are leading 
  1-17  organizations in seeking to defeat these attacks and 
  1-18  ameliorate the suffering of its victims; and 
 
  1-19  WHEREAS, there is a growing recognition that more resources 
  1-20  should be devoted to finding a cure and successful methods 
  1-21  of prevention and education for this dire affliction; and 
 
  1-22  WHEREAS, it would be fitting to have the month of May set 
  1-23  aside in recognition of the special burdens borne by victims 
  1-24  and in support of the efforts of the Georgia Strike Out 
  1-25  Stroke Committee, the American Heart Association Stroke Task 
  1-26  Force, and others to defeat this affliction. 
 
  1-27  NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF 
  1-28  REPRESENTATIVES that the month of May is designated as 
  1-29  Stroke Awareness Month in Georgia. 
 
  1-30  BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the members of this body join in 
  1-31  commending the outstanding efforts of the Georgia Strike Out 
  1-32  Stroke Committee, the American Heart Association Stroke Task 
  1-33  Force, and others.
