A RESOLUTION
1- 1 Designating the month of May as Stroke Awareness Month in
1- 2 Georgia; and for other purposes.
1- 3 WHEREAS, strokes or brain attacks are our nation's third
1- 4 leading cause of death, killing over 150,000 Americans
1- 5 annually and claiming thousands of victims in the State of
1- 6 Georgia; and
1- 7 WHEREAS, though one American experiences a stroke every
1- 8 minute of the day, up to 50 percent of strokes are
1- 9 preventable; and
1-10 WHEREAS, stroke is the leading cause of adult disability in
1-11 America, with three million citizens presently living with
1-12 the effects of a stroke or brain attack; and African
1-13 Americans have almost double the stroke risk of most other
1-14 racial groups; and
1-15 WHEREAS, the Georgia Strike Out Stroke Committee and the
1-16 American Heart Association Stroke Task Force are leading
1-17 organizations in seeking to defeat these attacks and
1-18 ameliorate the suffering of its victims; and
1-19 WHEREAS, there is a growing recognition that more resources
1-20 should be devoted to finding a cure and successful methods
1-21 of prevention and education for this dire affliction; and
1-22 WHEREAS, it would be fitting to have the month of May set
1-23 aside in recognition of the special burdens borne by victims
1-24 and in support of the efforts of the Georgia Strike Out
1-25 Stroke Committee, the American Heart Association Stroke Task
1-26 Force, and others to defeat this affliction.
1-27 NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF
1-28 REPRESENTATIVES that the month of May is designated as
1-29 Stroke Awareness Month in Georgia.
1-30 BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the members of this body join in
1-31 commending the outstanding efforts of the Georgia Strike Out
1-32 Stroke Committee, the American Heart Association Stroke Task
1-33 Force, and others.
