A RESOLUTION
1- 1 Urging the Federal Bureau of Investigation to eliminate the
1- 2 fee requirement associated with background checks of
1- 3 firefighters; and for other purposes.
1- 4 WHEREAS, Georgia's firefighters, like firefighters
1- 5 throughout the United States, are an integral part of the
1- 6 public safety sector in local communities; and
1- 7 WHEREAS, criminal activity is often associated with fires
1- 8 resulting in fire authorities becoming directly involved
1- 9 with the investigation of such criminal activity; and
1-10 WHEREAS, as a result of such involvement and in addition to
1-11 their contributions to public safety in general,
1-12 firefighters are placed in a role shoulder to shoulder with
1-13 local law enforcement officers in forming the public safety
1-14 team for communities across the nation; and
1-15 WHEREAS, the State of Georgia requires that
1-16 fingerprint-based record searches be conducted upon its
1-17 firefighters to determine the existence of any previous
1-18 criminal activity, which searches are performed in part by
1-19 the Federal Bureau of Investigation; and
1-20 WHEREAS, the Federal Bureau of Investigation does not charge
1-21 a fee to law enforcement agencies for such record searches,
1-22 but does in fact charge fire service agencies a $24.00 fee
1-23 to conduct such background checks.
1-24 NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF
1-25 REPRESENTATIVES that since firefighters play such an
1-26 important role in public safety and since it is in the
1-27 interest of the public for fingerprint-based criminal
1-28 background searches to be conducted upon firefighters, the
1-29 members of this body urge the Federal Bureau of
1-30 Investigation to eliminate the $24.00 fee requirement
1-31 associated with those record searches.
1-32 BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Clerk of the House of
1-33 Representatives is authorized and directed to transmit
1-34 appropriate copies of this resolution to the director of the
1-35 Federal Bureau of Investigation, the Attorney General of the
-1-
2- 1 United States, and to each member of the Georgia
2- 2 congressional delegation.
