A RESOLUTION
1- 1 Recognizing the R.E. Lee Institute; and for other purposes.
1- 2 WHEREAS, the first building, erected in the 1840's, was
1- 3 built as the Female Academy of Thomaston High School, and an
1- 4 addition was built in 1877 as the Male Academy; and
1- 5 WHEREAS, the name R.E. Lee High School was officially
1- 6 adopted in 1882; and
1- 7 WHEREAS, the main building cost $5,000.00 to build in 1884,
1- 8 and the auditorium, built at a cost of $10,000.00, was first
1- 9 used in 1901; and
1-10 WHEREAS, the main building and the auditorium burned in
1-11 February, 1909; and
1-12 WHEREAS, in March 1910, a new school was built at a cost of
1-13 $25,000.00, but burned in October, 1921, and the present
1-14 building was constructed in the following year within the
1-15 same walls; and
1-16 WHEREAS, the buildings were used as a public high school
1-17 until 1992, when the city and county schools were
1-18 consolidated, and students moved into the new city-county
1-19 high school; and
1-20 WHEREAS, a proposal for a special local option sales tax was
1-21 approved by referendum in 1995 and the proposed use for the
1-22 proceeds from the tax was the renovation of the vacant R.E.
1-23 Lee buildings; and
1-24 WHEREAS, the total amount raised by the special local option
1-25 sales tax for renovation was $4,480,000.00, and the
1-26 renovation, begun in November 1996, was completed in July
1-27 1998; and
1-28 WHEREAS, the renovated R.E. Lee High School became the
1-29 Thomaston-Upson Government Complex, the administrative
1-30 offices for the city and county governments.
1-31 NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF
1-32 REPRESENTATIVES that the members of this body recognize the
1-33 illustrious academic history of the R.E. Lee Institute and

2- 1 its renovation for continued excellence in service to the
2- 2 people of Thomaston and Upson County.
2- 3 BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Clerk of the House of
2- 4 Representatives is authorized and directed to transmit an
2- 5 appropriate copy of this resolution to the governing
2- 6 authorities of Thomaston and Upson County.
