                             A RESOLUTION 
 
  1- 1  Recognizing the 250th Anniversary of the final participation 
  1- 2  by James Edward Oglethorpe as a member of the Georgia 
  1- 3  Trustees and welcoming the distinguished delegation of 
  1- 4  visitors from Godalming and Cranham, England on this 
  1- 5  auspicious occasion; and for other purposes. 
 
  1- 6  WHEREAS, James Edward Oglethorpe grew up in Godalming, 
  1- 7  England, on the family estate of Westbrook Manor, and owned 
  1- 8  land and residences in the nearby Surrey community of 
  1- 9  Haslemere; and 
 
  1-10  WHEREAS, in 1722, the voters of Haslemere elected James 
  1-11  Edward Oglethorpe to the British House of Commons, where he 
  1-12  became a national hero leading a movement for prison reform 
  1-13  in England, and out of this movement, James Edward 
  1-14  Oglethorpe was principally responsible for the issuance of a 
  1-15  royal charter by King George II creating the Colony of 
  1-16  Georgia in 1732; and 
 
  1-17  WHEREAS, James Edward Oglethorpe was named as the Trustee of 
  1-18  Georgia and personally accompanied the first shipload of 
  1-19  English settlers to the new colony of Georgia, departing 
  1-20  Gravesend on November 17, 1732, and arriving at Yamacraw 
  1-21  Bluff on the Savannah River on February 12, 1733 - a day 
  1-22  long celebrated as "Georgia Day"; and 
 
  1-23  WHEREAS, for his essential role in the chartering and 
  1-24  settlement of the colony, James Edward Oglethorpe is widely 
  1-25  recognized as the founder of Georgia; and 
 
  1-26  WHEREAS, on his final return from Georgia in 1743, James 
  1-27  Edward Oglethorpe again resided in Gadalming until his 
  1-28  marriage to Elizabeth Wright of Cranham, England, where upon 
  1-29  he moved to Cranham to reside with his new wife on her 
  1-30  inherited estate; and 
 
  1-31  WHEREAS, the Oglethorpe family estate of Westbrook Manor was 
  1-32  converted into a home for girls and women with epilepsy by 
  1-33  the Countess of Meath and is now known as the Meath Home and 
  1-34  is a charitable facility and living monument to James Edward 
  1-35  Oglethorpe; and

  2- 1  WHEREAS, beginning in 1983 with a delegation of Georgia 
  2- 2  officials and citizens led by Lieutenant Governor Zell 
  2- 3  Miller to England to commemorate Georgia's 250th birthday, 
  2- 4  the citizens of Georgia and Godalming have developed a 
  2- 5  special shared cultural heritage that has been celebrated 
  2- 6  through numerous projects and official and unofficial 
  2- 7  visits, including the most recent official delegation led by 
  2- 8  Governor Zell Miller in 1996 which visited various sites 
  2- 9  throughout England associated with the life of Georgia's 
  2-10  founder to celebrate the James Edward Oglethorpe 
  2-11  Tercentenary, where the officials and citizens of Godalming 
  2-12  and Meath Home gave the Georgia delegation a most gracious 
  2-13  reception; and 
 
  2-14  WHEREAS, 1999 marks the 250th anniversary of the final 
  2-15  participation by James Edward Oglethorpe as a member of the 
  2-16  Georgia Trustees and it is proper that Georgians recognize 
  2-17  the many contributions of James Edward Oglethorpe during his 
  2-18  service on the Trustees, and in conjunction with this 
  2-19  anniversary a delegation of officials and citizens from 
  2-20  Godalming and other areas of England have traveled to 
  2-21  Georgia to participate in "Georgia Day" ceremonies in 
  2-22  Savannah, and to visit St. Simon's Island, Augusta, 
  2-23  Oglethorpe County, Georgia's State Capitol, Oglethorpe 
  2-24  University, and other sites associated with the life and 
  2-25  legacy of James Edward Oglethorpe; and 
 
  2-26  WHEREAS, it is fitting and proper that this body should 
  2-27  recognize our distinguished visitors from England. 
 
  2-28  NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF 
  2-29  REPRESENTATIVES that on behalf of the people of Georgia this 
  2-30  body acknowledges its sincere appreciation to the officials 
  2-31  and people of Gadalming and other areas of England for 
  2-32  keeping alive the memory of Georgia founder James Edward 
  2-33  Oglethorpe. 
 
  2-34  BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that the people of Georgia express 
  2-35  their special appreciation to the officials, staff, and 
  2-36  benefactors of the Meath Home in Godalming for their care 
  2-37  and keeping of the original family home of James Edward 
  2-38  Oglethorpe. 
 
  2-39  BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Clerk of the House of 
  2-40  Representatives is authorized and directed to transmit an 
  2-41  appropriate copy of this resolution to Mr. Ed Jackson, 
  2-42  Executive Director of the James Edward Oglethorpe 
  2-43  Tercentenary Commission.
