HR 397 LC 22 3532 A RESOLUTION Honoring the Tau Sigma Chapter of the Kappa Delta Pi International Honor Society in Education; and for other purposes. WHEREAS, the Tau Sigma Chapter of the Kappa Delta Pi International Honor Society in Education was chartered at Kennesaw State University in 1994; and WHEREAS, one of 19 active chapters in Georgia, the chapter maintains a membership base of more than 105 active education students; and WHEREAS, the chapter is planning its annual "Reading is Fun" project in Cobb County for the week of April 18-24; and WHEREAS, chapter members will encourage young children to enjoy reading by reading to them at local libraries, schools, and bookstores, and by conducting read-a-thons on the Kennesaw campus for children of elementary school age; and WHEREAS, the chapter will sponsor a book drive for donations of books, in conjunction with a major retail bookseller which will donate 1 percent of its profits on a specified day to the project, and donated books will be presented to less fortunate children; and WHEREAS, the chapter will purchase inspirational and self-help books for donation to area women and children's shelters for inspiration and education to persons facing significant personal challenges; and WHEREAS, the chapter's leadership role in highlighting the importance of reading and learning has been recognized by the international organization, when it named the chapter as one of six recipients among more than 500 chapters worldwide of the coveted "Chapter of Excellence Award"; and WHEREAS, the chapter's co-advisors, Dr. Linda Webb and Dr. David Martin, have encouraged the members of the chapter to develop innovative service projects. NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES that the members of this body honor the -1- LC 22 3532 co-advisors and members of the Tau Sigma Chapter of the Kappa Delta Pi International Honor Society in Education for their energetic and enthusiastic design and participation in service projects emphasizing the importance of reading and learning.                              A RESOLUTION 
 
  1- 1  Commending Richard English, Jr.; and for other purposes. 
 
  1- 2  WHEREAS, Richard English, Jr., is an extraordinary Georgia 
  1- 3  citizen.  A resident of Fort Gaines, Georgia, he has been 
  1- 4  instrumental in the success of his community for over 20 
  1- 5  years; and 
 
  1- 6  WHEREAS, Richard English, Jr., is a graduate of Speight High 
  1- 7  School in Fort Gaines and of West Georgia Tech; he also 
  1- 8  attended the Academy of ACCG Leadership School through the 
  1- 9  University of Georgia and numerous other workshops and 
  1-10  leadership schools; and 
 
  1-11  WHEREAS, his service in the United States Army and the 
  1-12  reserves during the Vietnam War marked the beginning of his 
  1-13  service to his fellow man.  A retired building supervisor 
  1-14  for the Ogletree Center, Mr. English is currently a 
  1-15  carpenter and an active public servant; and 
 
  1-16  WHEREAS, in 1978, Mr. English was the first African American 
  1-17  elected to the Troup County Board of Commissioners and 1998 
  1-18  marked his 20th year on the board. He has been chairman of 
  1-19  the Troup County Parks and Recreation Commission, 
  1-20  Neighborhood Housing Services of LaGrange, and the Troup 
  1-21  County Board of Health and a member of the 
  1-22  Chattahoochee-Flint RDC and the LaGrange Chamber of 
  1-23  Commerce; and 
 
  1-24  WHEREAS, Mr. English is still active in the Association 
  1-25  County Commissioners of Georgia, the NAACP, 100 Black Men of 
  1-26  West Georgia, Inc., the American Legion Post #580, and the 
  1-27  National Democratic Party among other vital organizations; 
  1-28  and 
 
  1-29  WHEREAS, for his dedication to public service, Mr. English 
  1-30  has received many awards and recognitions, including awards 
  1-31  for outstanding leadership and distinguished service, from 
  1-32  the various organizations he has worked so hard to help and 
  1-33  from others who have seen the benefit of his intelligence, 
  1-34  integrity, and influence; and 
 
  1-35  WHEREAS, it is men like Richard English, Jr., who contribute 
  1-36  to the success of Georgia's communities and their status as

  2- 1  the best places to live, work, and worship in all the 
  2- 2  nation, and it is only fitting and proper that he be 
  2- 3  recognized and honored. 
 
  2- 4  NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF 
  2- 5  REPRESENTATIVES that the members of this body commend 
  2- 6  Richard English, Jr., for his many achievements and 
  2- 7  contributions to Troup County and West Georgia in general 
  2- 8  and recognize his numerous successes and honor and thank him 
  2- 9  for his dedication and hard work over the years. 
 
  2-10  BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Clerk of the House of 
  2-11  Representatives is authorized and directed to transmit an
