                             A RESOLUTION

1- 1 Strongly urging the Georgia State Board of Pharmacy to
1- 2 require brand names on the label of drug containers when a
1- 3 generic drug is substituted for that brand name drug; and
  1- 4 for other purposes.

1- 5 WHEREAS, the option of substituting a generic drug for a

1- 7 drug costs for citizens of this state; and

1- 8 WHEREAS, once the prescription is filled with a generic
1- 9 drug, the patient for whom the drug was prescribed has no
1-10 record of the brand name drug for which the generic drug was
  1-11 substituted; and

1-12 WHEREAS, the patient should be able to obtain such
  1-13 information easily; and

1-14 WHEREAS, the simplest way to provide that information is to
1-15 have it included on the label of the prescription drug
  1-16 container; and

1-17 WHEREAS, the elderly of this state, through their
1-18 representatives to the Silver-Haired Legislature, have
  1-19 requested such labeling; and

1-20 WHEREAS, the Georgia State Board Pharmacy has the regulatory
1-21 authority to require such labeling.

1-22 NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF
1-23 GEORGIA that the Georgia State Board of Pharmacy is strongly
1-24 urged to promulgate regulations to require that the brand
1-25 name of a drug be included on the label of a container when
1-26 a generic drug is substituted for that brand name drug.

1-27 BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Clerk of the House of
1-28 Representatives is authorized and directed to transmit an
1-29 appropriate copy of this resolution to the president of the
1-30 Georgia State Board of Pharmacy.
