A RESOLUTION
1- 1 Commending Mr. Charles Elmore; and for other purposes.
1- 2 WHEREAS, on February 25, 1999, Mr. Charles Elmore, upon a
1- 3 nomination by retired educator Mozelle Clemmons, was one of
1- 4 six Georgians to receive the Governor's Award in Humanities,
1- 5 which honors contributions to building community, character,
1- 6 and citizenship in the state through humanities education;
1- 7 and
1- 8 WHEREAS, Mr. Elmore attended St. Pius X School in Savannah
1- 9 and received undergraduate degrees in biology and chemistry
1-10 from Savannah State University, and he has since obtained a
1-11 master's degree in print and broadcast journalism and a
1-12 doctorate in higher education administration from the
1-13 University of Michigan at Ann Arbor; and
1-14 WHEREAS, his interests are encyclopedic, and he spent two
1-15 years researching and writing a biography of Richard Wright,
1-16 Sr., the first president of Savannah State University; his
1-17 interest in jazz (he has over 300 jazz recordings in his
1-18 library) led him to research and write a book entitled All
1-19 That Savannah Jazz; and
1-20 WHEREAS, while he is a Catholic, his interest in the Baptist
1-21 faith because of its ties to early African Americans
1-22 resulted in his being commissioned to write a history of
1-23 Savannah's First Bryan Baptist Church, one of the oldest
1-24 Baptist churches in North America; and
1-25 WHEREAS, his research in that project led him to visit the
1-26 grave of an early chronicler of the church's history, James
1-27 Merilus Simms, and, while visiting Simms's grave, Mr. Elmore
1-28 was moved to write a book about the cemetery, An Historical
1-29 Guide to Laurel Grove Cemetery South, for which he charted
1-30 all of the graves in the cemetery and wrote commentaries on
1-31 the lives of 80 persons buried there; and
1-32 WHEREAS, Mr. Elmore, who teaches journalism, freshman
1-33 composition, world literature, and African-American oral
1-34 tradition, fiction, and nonfiction at Savannah State
1-35 University, will be remembered as a chronicler of the
1-36 African-American experience, especially in Savannah.

2- 1 NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF
2- 2 REPRESENTATIVES that the members of this body commend Mr.
2- 3 Charles Elmore for his many accomplishments and especially
2- 4 for his having received the Governor's Award in Humanities.
2- 5 BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Clerk of the House of
2- 6 Representatives is authorized and directed to transmit an
2- 7 appropriate copy of this resolution to Mr. Charles Elmore.
