                             A RESOLUTION 
 
  1- 1  Commending George Walton Comprehensive High School and 
  1- 2  inviting Principal John Flatt and representatives of the 
  1- 3  student government to appear before the House of 
  1- 4  Representatives; and for other purposes. 
 
  1- 5  WHEREAS, Walton High School in Cobb County, Georgia, has 
  1- 6  recently been singled out by the U.S. News and World Report 
  1- 7  as one of the best high schools in the country; and 
 
  1- 8  WHEREAS, Walton High School is one of six public, parochial, 
  1- 9  and independent high schools profiled in a cover story which 
  1-10  ran January 18, 1999, and which details the findings of a 
  1-11  two-year analysis of secondary education in America; and 
 
  1-12  WHEREAS, the magazine's writers and researchers studied more 
  1-13  than 1,000 high-performing schools in Atlanta, Boston, 
  1-14  Chicago, Dallas-Fort Worth, Detroit, and New York; and 
 
  1-15  WHEREAS, the 2,281 student Walton High School was lauded for 
  1-16  its performance as a premier secondary school which pushes 
  1-17  all of its students toward high academic achievement; and 
 
  1-18  WHEREAS, as examples of its astonishing success, the 
  1-19  magazine reported that 97 percent of Walton's graduates go 
  1-20  on to college and the SAT mean score for the top 10 percent 
  1-21  of its 1997 seniors was 1478 of a possible 1600; and 
 
  1-22  WHEREAS, the unusually high level of parental involvement in 
  1-23  the life of the school was cited as the key to the school's 
  1-24  educational excellence; and 
 
  1-25  WHEREAS, inspired by the determination, dedication, and 
  1-26  innovative leadership of Principal John Flatt, more than 
  1-27  2,000 of Walton's parents--representing about 40 percent of 
  1-28  the students--volunteer their time or resources in some 
  1-29  capacity and have helped to strengthen nearly every aspect 
  1-30  of their children's education; and 
 
  1-31  WHEREAS, today, there is a higher level of parental 
  1-32  involvement at Walton High School than at any other high 
  1-33  school in the state, according to the PTSA; and

  2- 1  WHEREAS, by its firm commitment to student achievement, 
  2- 2  Walton High School has established a firm and well-deserved 
  2- 3  reputation for excellence both locally and nationally. 
 
  2- 4  NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF 
  2- 5  REPRESENTATIVES that the members of this body commend George 
  2- 6  Walton Comprehensive High School for its national 
  2- 7  recognition as a premier secondary school and for its 
  2- 8  outstanding commitment to quality education in the State of 
  2- 9  Georgia. 
 
  2-10  BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that Principal John Flatt and 
  2-11  representatives of the Walton High School student government 
  2-12  are invited to appear before the House of Representatives at 
  2-13  a date and time to be determined by the Speaker of the House 
  2-14  of Representatives. 
 
  2-15  BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Clerk of the House of 
  2-16  Representatives is authorized and directed to transmit an
