A RESOLUTION
1- 1 Commending Herbert E. Newman and inviting him to appear
1- 2 before the House of Representatives; and for other purposes.
1- 3 WHEREAS, Herbert E. Newman of Bremen, Georgia, was inducted
1- 4 into the Georgia Amateur Softball Association Hall of Fame
1- 5 on February 20, 1999, in recognition of his impressive
1- 6 record spanning five decades; and
1- 7 WHEREAS, Herb Newman first experienced organized softball in
1- 8 1946 as he began a career that allowed him to play softball
1- 9 or baseball in the town he was in during the summer; and
1-10 WHEREAS, from the late 1940's through the early 1960's, he
1-11 played baseball or fast-pitch softball in Carrollton,
1-12 Bremen, Tallapoosa, Temple, and Augusta, Georgia, as well as
1-13 in the neighboring states; and
1-14 WHEREAS, he was instrumental in organizing the first amateur
1-15 softball league in Bremen, Georgia, and he was recognized as
1-16 one of the best slow pitchers in the area who also had a
1-17 fabulous batting average of over .600 each season; and
1-18 WHEREAS, Newman and the Ray Sewell team won more than 20
1-19 tournaments in the North Georgia area and were contenders
1-20 for the A.S.A. State Championship each year; and
1-21 WHEREAS, he is the first citizen from Haralson County to be
1-22 inducted into the A.S.A. Hall of Fame, and his contributions
1-23 and achievements in this great American sport deserve
1-24 recognition and high praise.
1-25 NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF
1-26 REPRESENTATIVES that the members of this body recognize and
1-27 commend Herbert E. Newman on his induction into the A.S.A.
1-28 Hall of Fame and invite him to appear before the House of
1-29 Representatives at a time to be determined by the Speaker of
1-30 the House of Representatives.
1-31 BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Clerk of the House of
1-32 Representatives is authorized and directed to transmit an
1-33 appropriate copy of this resolution to Herbert E. Newman.
