                             A RESOLUTION 
 
  1- 1  Honoring Harry Rossoll and expressing regret at his passing; 
  1- 2  and for other purposes. 
 
  1- 3  WHEREAS, Harry Rossoll was an award winning illustrator and 
  1- 4  artist whose most famous creation is Smokey Bear; and 
 
  1- 5  WHEREAS, a United States Forest Service illustrator from 
  1- 6  1937-1971, Mr. Rossoll created Smokey Bear in 1944 as a way 
  1- 7  to promote the critically important message of forest fire 
  1- 8  prevention; and 
 
  1- 9  WHEREAS, the Smokey Bear campaign was one of the most 
  1-10  successful public relations campaigns ever and generations 
  1-11  of children have loved Smokey Bear and learned respect for 
  1-12  the forest and fire prevention methods thanks to Mr. 
  1-13  Rossoll; and 
 
  1-14  WHEREAS, in addition to drawing Smokey Bear and inventing 
  1-15  over 1,000 Smokey Says messages, Mr. Rossoll was also a 
  1-16  muralist whose huge canvasses hang in the Beavers Bend State 
  1-17  Park in Oklahoma; and 
 
  1-18  WHEREAS, this Atlanta artist brought joy to many through his 
  1-19  truly American brand of illustrating; he said he liked to 
  1-20  paint what people liked to see. This was evident when he 
  1-21  painted the main street of Jersey, Georgia, and could barely 
  1-22  keep up with demand for the prints; and 
 
  1-23  WHEREAS, Mr. Rossoll was a man of many talents; in addition 
  1-24  to painting, he played the trombone; and 
 
  1-25  WHEREAS, one of Georgia's most talented citizens, Mr. 
  1-26  Rossoll is deserving of recognition and honor in light of 
  1-27  his immeasurable contributions to the preservation of nature 
  1-28  and the joy he brought to children and adults alike with his 
  1-29  art, so it is only fitting and proper that he be remembered 
  1-30  with gratitude by all Georgians. 
 
  1-31  NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF 
  1-32  REPRESENTATIVES that the members of this body honor the life 
  1-33  and work of Harry Rossoll and express their deepest regret 
  1-34  to his family and friends on the occasion of his passing.

  2- 1  BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Clerk of the House of 
  2- 2  Representatives is authorized and directed to transmit an 
  2- 3  appropriate copy of this resolution to the family of Harry
