A RESOLUTION
1- 1 Commending and congratulating Dr. Claire Hicks and inviting
1- 2 her to appear before the House of Representatives; and for
1- 3 other purposes.
1- 4 WHEREAS, Dr. Claire Hicks of Jesup, Georgia, was named 1999
1- 5 Georgia Woman of the Year by the Georgia Woman of the Year
1- 6 Committee, Inc., and the Georgia Commission on Women; and
1- 7 WHEREAS, she earned her Bachelor of Arts degree in religion
1- 8 from Emory University, completed premed studies at Georgia
1- 9 State University, and attained her Doctor of Medicine degree
1-10 at the Medical College of Georgia; and
1-11 WHEREAS, her distinguished record of public service includes
1-12 outstanding leadership as director of the clinic in Wayne
1-13 County, chairperson for the Wayne County Board of Health,
1-14 clinical director of the wellness center for persons with
1-15 contagious diseases, and medical director of the Hospice of
1-16 South Georgia; and
1-17 WHEREAS, this energetic and innovative doctor makes frequent
1-18 presentations on the chronic care for persons with
1-19 infectious diseases, is unafraid to offer medical care to
1-20 those who might meet reluctance elsewhere, and
1-21 conscientiously attends her thriving private medical
1-22 practice; and
1-23 WHEREAS, her dedication, compassion, and expertise have been
1-24 recognized many times, with such awards as the 1988 Family
1-25 Practice Resident of the Year Award, the HCFA
1-26 Administrator's Award in 1997, the Baptist Medical/Dental
1-27 Fellowship Award for Compassionate Care in 1998, and the
1-28 Georgia Women's Pioneer in Health Award from the Georgia
1-29 Women's History Month Committee in 1998; and
1-30 WHEREAS, she and her husband Neill Herring have two fine
1-31 daughters, Helena and Carolyn.
1-32 NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF
1-33 REPRESENTATIVES that the members of this body commend and
1-34 congratulate Dr. Claire Hicks, 1999 Georgia Woman of the
1-35 Year, with heartfelt thanks for her many contributions to
1-36 improving public health and invite Dr. Hicks to appear

2- 1 before the House of Representatives on a date and at a time
2- 2 to be designated by the Speaker of the House of
2- 3 Representatives.
2- 4 BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Clerk of the House of
2- 5 Representatives is authorized and directed to transmit an
2- 6 appropriate copy of this resolution to Dr. Claire Hicks.
