                             A RESOLUTION

1- 1 Urging all schools, colleges, and universities which receive
1- 2 public funds to change voluntarily any mascot relating to
1- 3 any ethnic group; and for other purposes.

1- 4 WHEREAS, many schools, colleges, and universities promote
1- 5 their athletic teams and inspire unity of spirit among
1- 6 students, faculty, and employees by using mascots; and

1- 7 WHEREAS, some of these mascots are based upon stereotypical
1- 8 qualities or traits often attributed to ethnic groups in the
  1- 9 past; and

1-10 WHEREAS, many persons who are proud of their ethnic heritage
1-11 find mascots based on stereotypes embarrassing or demeaning,
1-12 either to their ethnic group or to themselves as
  1-13 individuals; and

1-14 WHEREAS, our ability to live in harmony in Georgia's diverse
1-15 society depends upon mutual respect among ethnic groups and
1-16 a recognition that each individual is to be evaluated on the
1-17 basis of that individual's traits and abilities, rather than
1-18 on the basis of the hostile and unfair stereotypes of
  1-19 yesteryear; and

1-20 WHEREAS, the use of mascots in ways which impair our ability
1-21 to live together in harmony and mutual respect is a misuse
  1-22 of public funds.

1-23 NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF
1-24 GEORGIA that the members of this body urge all schools,
1-25 colleges, and universities which receive public funds to
1-26 change voluntarily any mascot relating to any ethnic group.

1-27 BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Clerk of the House of
1-28 Representatives is authorized and directed to transmit an
1-29 appropriate copy of this resolution to each school, college,
1-30 and university which receives public funds.
