A RESOLUTION
1- 1 Commending members of the Peace Officer Standards and
1- 2 Training Council and designating a day of recognition for
1- 3 such council; and for other purposes.
1- 4 WHEREAS, peace officers play an essential role in
1- 5 safeguarding the rights and freedoms of the citizens of our
1- 6 state and nation; and
1- 7 WHEREAS, there are over 985 law enforcement agencies in the
1- 8 State of Georgia which employ in excess of 45,000 peace
1- 9 officers who provide critical law enforcement functions for
1-10 the citizens of this state; and
1-11 WHEREAS, it is important that the citizens of our state
1-12 understand the duties and responsibilities of peace officers
1-13 and the problems they encounter and express gratitude for
1-14 the services provided by our peace officers; and
1-15 WHEREAS, the Georgia Peace Officer Standards and Training
1-16 Council consists of representatives from various state and
1-17 local law enforcement agencies, state public safety
1-18 associations, and elected officials; and
1-19 WHEREAS, the Georgia Peace Officer Standards and Training
1-20 Council was created by the General Assembly in 1970 and
1-21 given the responsibility to raise the level of competence of
1-22 law enforcement officers by establishing and administering
1-23 minimum standards relating to physical, mental, and moral
1-24 fitness which will govern the selection of peace officers
1-25 and to establish minimum standards for training such
1-26 officers; and
1-27 WHEREAS, the standards and training established by the
1-28 council and the performance of the council's other duties
1-29 enables peace officers in this state to carry out law
1-30 enforcement functions with the highest degree of
1-31 professionalism, confidence, and courage; and
1-32 WHEREAS, the Georgia Peace Officer Standards and Training
1-33 Council is celebrating its 30th anniversary during the year
1-34 2000; and

2- 1 WHEREAS, it is only fitting and proper that the members of
2- 2 the Georgia Peace Officer Standards and Training Council be
2- 3 recognized for their dedication to professionalism in law
2- 4 enforcement and for their outstanding public service.
2- 5 NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF
2- 6 REPRESENTATIVES that the members of this body commend each
2- 7 member of the Georgia Peace Officer Standards and Training
2- 8 Council for his or her outstanding public service and hereby
2- 9 designate February 3, 2000, as "Georgia Peace Officer
2-10 Standards and Training Council Recognition Day" in Georgia.
2-11 BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Clerk of the House of
2-12 Representatives is authorized and directed to transmit
2-13 appropriate copies of this resolution to Chief James
2-14 Chadwick, Chairman of the Georgia Peace Officer Standards
2-15 and Training Council.
