A RESOLUTION
1- 1 Recognizing and commending Home Depot for its environmental
1- 2 leadership; and for other purposes.
1- 3 WHEREAS, Home Depot, Inc., is among Georgia's largest, most
1- 4 rapidly growing and most distinguished businesses, having
1- 5 established itself as a national leader in the sale of
1- 6 building materials and supplies; and
1- 7 WHEREAS, Home Depot has its headquarters in Atlanta, in
1- 8 addition to enjoying a major presence in the state as a
1- 9 whole, and has emerged as a leader in the promotion of a
1-10 socially responsible corporate culture; and
1-11 WHEREAS, Georgia's eminence in the production of lumber is
1-12 seriously challenged by competition from off-shore sources
1-13 that are often subsidized and almost invariably produced by
1-14 environmentally irresponsible, unsustainable practices; and
1-15 WHEREAS, in 1999, Home Depot, the largest retailer of lumber
1-16 in the world, announced that it would "stop selling wood
1-17 products from environmentally sensitive areas," and would
1-18 use independent, third-party certification of wood consumer
1-19 products for which a chain of custody can be shown from the
1-20 forest to the ultimate customer; and
1-21 WHEREAS, Home Depot's commitment to environmental
1-22 responsibility extends from the point of lumber harvest past
1-23 the production chain to influence its customers to develop
1-24 and exercise environmental consciousness.
1-25 NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF
1-26 GEORGIA that the members of this body commend Home Depot,
1-27 its management and employees, and their certification agent,
1-28 the Certified Forest Products Council, for its invaluable
1-29 contributions to the world's natural environment and to
1-30 Georgia's environment and forest products industry.
1-31 BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Clerk of the House of
1-32 Representatives is authorized and directed to transmit an
1-33 appropriate copy of this resolution to Home Depot.
