                             A RESOLUTION 
 
  1- 1  Recognizing February 3, 1999, as "Girls and Women in Sports 
  1- 2  Day" and commending and inviting Georgia's outstanding 
  1- 3  female athletes to appear before the House of 
  1- 4  Representatives; and for other purposes. 
 
  1- 5  WHEREAS, the first Thursday in February of each year has 
  1- 6  been designated by the Georgia General Assembly as "Girls 
  1- 7  and Women in Sports Day"; and 
 
  1- 8  WHEREAS, "Girls and Women in Sports Day" falls on February 
  1- 9  3, 1999, and its purpose is to recognize women and girls in 
  1-10  sports across Georgia, to celebrate the outstanding 
  1-11  achievements of female athletes, and to direct attention to 
  1-12  the unique issues facing females in sports; and 
 
  1-13  WHEREAS, the girls and women of Georgia have always been 
  1-14  winners in their athletic endeavors on the sports fields and 
  1-15  arenas across Georgia and the globe; and 
 
  1-16  WHEREAS, many groups and individuals have worked tirelessly 
  1-17  to promote and enhance opportunities for female athletes in 
  1-18  Georgia's schools and communities; and 
 
  1-19  WHEREAS, the number of women, young and old, competing in 
  1-20  athletic events continues to grow and Georgia's women 
  1-21  continue to shine in their athletic performances, most 
  1-22  recently for all to see at the 1996 Olympics in Atlanta; and 
 
  1-23  WHEREAS, the entire State of Georgia is proud of our female 
  1-24  athletes, both past and present, and is grateful for the 
  1-25  reflected glory; and 
 
  1-26  WHEREAS, it has been proven that participation in athletics 
  1-27  strengthens the self-esteem as well as health of Georgia's 
  1-28  girls and women and enhances their ability to lead full 
  1-29  lives and to contribute to their community and family; and 
 
  1-30  WHEREAS, in connection with "Girls and Women in Sports Day," 
  1-31  the most outstanding female high school and college athletes 
  1-32  in Georgia during the past year will be named and honored; 
  1-33  and

  2- 1  WHEREAS, in order to commend and honor Georgia's female 
  2- 2  athletes, the state will recognize February 3, 1999, "Girls 
  2- 3  and Women in Sports Day." 
 
  2- 4  NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF 
  2- 5  REPRESENTATIVES that this body recognizes February 3, 1999, 
  2- 6  as "Girls and Women in Sports Day" and commends and 
  2- 7  congratulates all the girls and women in Georgia who 
  2- 8  participate in sports and achieve so much in the world of 
  2- 9  athletics. 
 
  2-10  BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the outstanding female athletes 
  2-11  are invited to appear before the House of Representatives on 
  2-12  February 3, 1999, at a time to be determined by the Speaker
