                             A RESOLUTION 
 
  1- 1  Honoring Bernie Bourdon and designating the Bernie Bourdon 
  1- 2  Memorial Bridge; and for other purposes. 
 
  1- 3  WHEREAS, Bernie Bourdon put his faith to work on behalf of 
  1- 4  those in need: the poor, the sick, the illiterate, the 
  1- 5  disabled, and the dying; and 
 
  1- 6  WHEREAS, he began Servants of the Lord - Meals on Wheels 
  1- 7  with $10.00 and served more than 90,000 meals to people who 
  1- 8  couldn't leave their homes in Rockdale County and Newton 
  1- 9  County on Saturdays and holidays for the past 13 years; and 
 
  1-10  WHEREAS, his exemplary leadership skills and tireless 
  1-11  dedication were evident in his daily service as director of 
  1-12  Tech Able, adapting toys and computers for physically 
  1-13  challenged people; as a mentor for young people who attended 
  1-14  Edwards Middle School; as a board member of Rockdale Reads 
  1-15  Literacy  program; as the treasurer of Healing Hands; as 
  1-16  chaplain for Rockdale Hospital and Shepard's Gate Hospice; 
  1-17  as an instrumental figure in developing the Wayne Kerr 
  1-18  Health Clinic; and as an energetic and active member of St. 
  1-19  James Catholic Church, the Knights of Columbus, and the 
  1-20  Conyers Kiwanis Club; and 
 
  1-21  WHEREAS, he spent much of November and December each year as 
  1-22  Santa Claus, delighting in sharing the hopes and dreams of 
  1-23  the children sitting on his lap, especially the children of 
  1-24  the Downs Syndrome Association of Atlanta, whom he knew by 
  1-25  name; and 
 
  1-26  WHEREAS, his generous heart and genuine love for humanity 
  1-27  were recognized by many awards, including the Salvation Army 
  1-28  Award, the Kiwanis Vision Award, the JC Penney Golden Rule 
  1-29  Award, the Kleenex God Bless You Award, 11 Alive Community 
  1-30  Service Award, the Governor's Award, and the Jefferson Award 
  1-31  from the American Institute for Public Service; and 
 
  1-32  WHEREAS, he will be sorely missed, although he left his 
  1-33  community a legacy of love. 
 
  1-34  NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE GENERAL ASSEMBLY that 
  1-35  the members of this body honor the compassion and love of

  2- 1  Bernie Bourdon and his distinguished record of public 
  2- 2  service. 
 
  2- 3  BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the bridge now known as the 
  2- 4  Parker Road Bridge, which crosses I-20 between the West 
  2- 5  Avenue exit and the State Highway 138 exit is designated as 
  2- 6  the "Bernie Bourdon Memorial Bridge." 
 
  2- 7  BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Department of Transportation 
  2- 8  is authorized and directed to erect and maintain appropriate
