A RESOLUTION
1- 1 Honoring the Georgia Humanities Council and Dr. Jamil S.
1- 2 Zainaldin and recognizing February 25, 1999, as Georgia
1- 3 Humanities Council Day at the State Capitol; and for other
1- 4 purposes.
1- 5 WHEREAS, the Georgia Humanities Council was founded in 1970
1- 6 by a volunteer citizens committee as one of the first state
1- 7 humanities councils in the country; and
1- 8 WHEREAS, the Georgia Humanities Council is an independent,
1- 9 nonpartisan, nonprofit organization that marshals federal,
1-10 state, and private financial support for educational
1-11 activities in the humanities benefiting all Georgia
1-12 residents; and
1-13 WHEREAS, through its grant program, special educational
1-14 initiatives, loaned educational resources, and public
1-15 programs, the Georgia Humanities Council has over the past
1-16 29 years supported libraries, schools, colleges and
1-17 universities, historical societies, museums, and other
1-18 nonprofit organizations in every region of Georgia; and
1-19 WHEREAS, the humanities provide the basics of reading,
1-20 writing, and self-expression, and the subject areas of the
1-21 humanities help develop the skills of critical thinking and
1-22 precise communication; and
1-23 WHEREAS, the role of humanities education is to transmit
1-24 from one generation to the next the great lessons of our
1-25 life together as a community, a society, and a nation,
1-26 lessons that are stories of justice and injustice, of caring
1-27 and cruelty, of loyalty and betrayal, of struggle and of
1-28 overcoming. In other words, stories of what it means to
1-29 live together in community and to work together in pursuit
1-30 of common goals; and
1-31 WHEREAS, these great lessons are illuminated and honored in
1-32 our religious traditions, heritage, and system of laws and
1-33 are given expression in our recording of history and in our
1-34 literature; and

2- 1 WHEREAS, our understanding of this cultural heritage lives
2- 2 inside each of us, influencing our actions and providing the
2- 3 backdrop for responsible citizenship; and
2- 4 WHEREAS, through conferences, public lectures, teacher
2- 5 education programs, and community grants, the Georgia
2- 6 Humanities Council has been a catalyst for fostering
2- 7 school-community partnerships for addressing character
2- 8 education in schools throughout Georgia; and
2- 9 WHEREAS, the Georgia Humanities Council, through its
2-10 character education program on "Rights, Responsibilities and
2-11 Respect" has conducted workshops for Georgia teachers from
2-12 across the state; and
2-13 WHEREAS, the Georgia Humanities Council has been nationally
2-14 recognized for its efforts to promote locally developed
2-15 approaches in character education, and the General Assembly
2-16 has enacted legislation in support of character education;
2-17 and
2-18 WHEREAS, on February 25, 1999, the Governor is presenting
2-19 awards on behalf of the Georgia Humanities Council to
2-20 various deserving organizations and individuals throughout
2-21 the state, making such day "Georgia Humanities Council Day."
2-22 NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE SENATE that the
2-23 members of this body recognize that the humanities are a
2-24 vital element in education for citizenship and commend the
2-25 Georgia Humanities Council for its exemplary work and
2-26 service to the people of Georgia and urge that the Georgia
2-27 Humanities Council continue and enhance its support of
2-28 character education among teachers, parents, business
2-29 leaders, and communities throughout our state.
2-30 BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Secretary of the Senate is
2-31 authorized and directed to transmit an appropriate copy of
2-32 this resolution to Dr. Jamil S. Zainaldin.
