A RESOLUTION
1- 1 Recognizing and commending Bonnie Manning of Curtis Baptist
1- 2 School in Augusta, Georgia; and for other purposes.
1- 3 WHEREAS, Bonnie Manning is an outstanding teacher at Curtis
1- 4 Baptist School in Augusta, Georgia, where she serves as the
1- 5 classroom instructor for the Fourth Grade and the Fifth
1- 6 Grade accelerated classes; and
1- 7 WHEREAS, on December 2, 1998, she literally saved the life
1- 8 of one of her Fourth Grade students, Ashley Memory, who
1- 9 appeared to be choking while having her lunch; and
1-10 WHEREAS, Mrs. Manning happened to walk by the table at which
1-11 the young student was eating, noticed that she seemed to be
1-12 strangling, and immediately responded by applying the
1-13 Heimlich maneuver which dislodged the food particle and
1-14 permitted this panicked student to resume breathing
1-15 normally; and
1-16 WHEREAS, Mrs. Manning demonstrated extraordinary skill and
1-17 ability throughout this very perilous situation, and her
1-18 calm manner and resolute purpose in applying this
1-19 life-saving technique averted a crisis and was truly heroic;
1-20 and
1-21 WHEREAS, the remarkable courage and timely response of this
1-22 astute teacher and her thorough understanding of first aid
1-23 practices deserve to be properly recognized and praised.
1-24 NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE SENATE that the
1-25 members of this body recognize and commend Bonnie Manning of
1-26 Curtis Baptist School for her heroic action and exceptional
1-27 response which saved the life of one of her very own
1-28 students.
1-29 BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Secretary of the Senate is
1-30 authorized and directed to transmit an appropriate copy of
1-31 this resolution to Bonnie Manning.
